Fall 2019 - As the person below me attests, I am someone who did all the reading and ended up with an A- in this class (ironically, my worst class this quarter). Doing well in this class is absolutely about how well you do on the exams. I got an A on the paper, but a 17/20 and 18/20 on the midterm bumped me down to an A-. I know many people who did not do all the reading but did better than I did. Be warned of this! Please, read each question carefully on the exam, as the small number of questions really leaves you in a vulnerable spot if you do not answer correctly. Regardless, I'm not too upset about my grade, as I enjoyed this class so so much! I found nearly all the readings and movies to be extremely fascinating, and Professor Wen's enthusiasm for the content made coming to lecture every week genuinely enjoyable. He cares a lot about his students and you can tell he's extremely knowledgable about the content he teaches. I hope that I'll be able to take another Scandinavian class with him while at UCLA.

Fall 2018 - Great professor, just as good as everyone says he is. Really cares about his students and what he's teaching, never wants to trick anybody. Workload was very light and exams were really easy and straightforward, just do the reading or at least skim it if you can. Loved this class and would recommend it to anyone.

Fall 2017 - Being a Writing II class, this course is very paper heavy. The course reader isn't very useful for the papers, but the majority of the lecture is discussions about the readings so make sure to do them. I took this fall quarter of freshman year so it was sort of a challenge to adjust to academic writing but the T.A.'s are immensly helpful as is the Writing Center! It was incredibly fun to watch Nordic films! Just don't slack off because it's an easy course, the papers are almost your entire grade.

The professor is really knowledgeable about the subject and his positive style of teaching is infectious. I would greatly recommend the professor. He is easier than the usual professor, but you really should read all that is assigned, including movies, so that you have a little more fun in the class as usual. His lectures are pretty standard, but I definitely would not rate them boring.

I took Prof. Wen's class Spring of '07. As an English major I was used to reading the traditional works of English and some American writers. This class exposed me to the 'other' side of European literature; one that is unique and creative. The authors definitely breath a different kind of air in the part of Europe. The unreliable narrator takes center stage, as well as Modern and Postmodern styles. As far as Prof. Wen is concerned, he makes the materials more enjoyable. He's young and energetic. My criticism however is towards some students who take his class and seem to not care at all about the material. If you do your part i.e. read and participate, you will assure yourself a satisfactory grade.
