This was one of the worst econ classes I've taken at UCLA, not only does the professor just really not explain anything but he doesnt provide accurate study materials or really support you much throughout. The midterm was reasonable (30%) but the final was obscenely hard and the curve that he applied was not transparent at all, I know of several people who found their grade boosted a significant amount from the curve and others who had no change from their raw score. I don't really understand why the course was set up the way it was but there was really no clear learning trajectory, the professor really just read off pre-written notes (some of which were from previous quarters so he doesn't really update materials) and just generally it was not great. Highly recommend NOT taking 103 with this professor if you can!
Great professor. He is so nice. His lecture is straightforward, and his exams are reasonable. He allows to take a one page notes to exam so that you don't need to memorize all the complicated formulas. He also concern about students, will always listen to students and take their suggestions. Take him and won't be regret
The class was pretty easy and straightforward. The professor is good but just a very boring lecturer especially with being on zoom. When I took it all tests were online and they were pretty easy.
I am beyond surprised after reading other comments on this class and the professor, I guess this just shows everyone is different. I would never recommend this class to others. It is useful, but not in the way the professor teaches. He reads lecture slides, and reads formulas without explaining. For his practice homework, they are usually 70 pages long. Yes, he said you dont need to do all of it. but who knows which of those questions will actually be on the test? then you ended up having to do all of it just because what if you missed something. Then, his practice questions, and his practice exams are often full of mistakes. His actual midterms are often really bad: after taking both midterms, we realized that for some multiple choices, the right answers were not even listed as a choice. I don't know if he curved them. He would suqeeze in all materials two days before exam and expect you to do all the question on practice tests and homework (70 pages long)_. the tests are a lot harder than his lectures. you don't need his lectures to do his tests. you need to do his practice exams to do his tests.
Professor Convery is a fantastic professor. You can tell he has mastered the course, cares about whether or not students grasp the material, and has clear and concise lectures. His lectures are very to the point and explain things in concrete ways using examples. His exams are straightforward, fair, and clear. He also provides practice midterms and finals which is great. Would definitely recommend this class to a friend. Super doable Econ upper div.
The class is structured with all multiple choice exams being 2 midterms (30% of grade each) and a final (40%). No additional assignments, but he provides practice questions that are pretty similar to the exam questions. If you put in the effort to make a good cheat sheet all of these exams are pretty easy, almost all of the exam solutions can be found in the material he provides, only a handful of questions the entire quarter require application of concepts. Content gets moderately harder after the first midterm but definitely a class that you can cram for a few days before each exam and get a good grade in the class. Would definitely take again, probably one of the easiest econ electives at UCLA.
Highly recommend this elective w/ Convery. He lectures in a very straightforward way and often ties in current events to the class material, so I actually learned something useful. Recorded lectures (although he might stop recording after this quarter), two midterms, one final, and you can use a cheatsheet for all of them. The exams are easy as long as you put in effort into your cheatsheet and run through the practice tests he gives out.
The midterm was pretty easy, but the final was deathly hard. Don't get negligent in preparing for the final like I did by becoming overconfident with how the midterm went. Convery's lectures weren't structured very well, but he is pretty helpful and clear when asking individual questions either during his OH or after classes.
Convery's one of my favorite professors and this class was as straightforward as econometrics gets. However, don't do what I did and underestimate the final. The final was like three times harder than the midterm.
