It was an absolute pleasure to take this class with this professor!
You have a research paper that you work throughout the quarter that's worth 50% of your final grade. However, as long as you complete and revise the section of the week, then you shouldn't worry at all! You get tons of aid in writing this paper from the TAs, professors, and the weekly critique from classmates. This class is extremely relaxed!
Professor Macey is one of my favorite professor's that I've had in UCLA! He is so nice and literally ask him to show you his cat and he will! HIS CAT'S NAME IS BLUE! I took this class during COVID season and really appreciated how Professor Macey really cared about his student's opinions. The class was 2 hours, but as time passed he cut it down to an hour in a half. The whole class literally consists of critiquing a research study you choose and writing about it! You have 10 weeks to write this paper and I had never written a research paper before but man Macey and my TA Will really helped me out! You don't need to buy any books for this class. All you do literally is write your paper and take quizzes, but you can take them how ever many times you want and he will count the highest grade! You also have to do a video on your paper, blog post, and a research post! I really enjoyed this class and I hope you reading this will too! Good luck!
I took Dr. Macey during COVID-19 so perhaps the structure of the class is a little different than how it would have been in person, but Dr. Macey is an incredible professor! He has done tons of research and was currently doing research of his own so he provided us with a lot of examples in class regarding the format and details of our paper. The workload is very doable; every week, a portion of the paper is due so there are ten portions of the paper in total. You get to pick an article of your choice and critique it. I have never done a critique like this before but I found that breaking it down by sections really helped me write this entire paper out verses trying to write the entire thing three days before it was due. He also set the class up so that all of our papers were in a shared Google Drive so we could all critique one another's paper and I found that it also helped with the writing process as well.
There are no tests in his class, the work you do is mainly: podcast quizzes (super easy), some group activities (like reading a paper together and picking out important details), weekly writings (section per week), a blog post and video pertaining to the article you chose, and of course, turning in the final paper!
The class itself was a little dry but I felt like that was because we weren't sitting with one another in person so it was easy to let your mind drift. Overall, Dr. Macey is an amazing professor!
Dr. Macey is a wonderful professor, and the following comments I will make do not reflect his role as a professor, but rather the structure of the class. I understand that because the class is a writing II class, there is little that he can do about the curriculum and structure. But on god, we wasted so much time. The amount of time I spent in lecture does not correspond to the amount that I learned. And it's not Dr. Macey's fault at all! He tried so hard to make the class engaging, but we could have used the time spent in this lecture to learn more about nurse burnout, or bullying in the workplace, or how to give report to a doctor, or just something actually applicable. Dr. Macey is freaking awesome tho.
