I had mixed feelings about this class. Gleizer was clearly passionate about mathematics, but this class's lack of organization made 31A my most stressful course this quarter. Grade breakdown was initially: 50% homework (6 homeworks, lowest score dropped), 10% midterm 1, 10% midterm 2, 30% final. It was eventually changed to: 50% homework (5 homeworks, lowest score dropped), 16.6% midterm 1, 16.6% midterm 2, 16.6% final.

We were initially supposed to cover 6 chapters, but by Week 4, we were still on Chapter 1. In the end, we only covered 5 chapters, and this ended up changing how final grades would be broken down. To compensate for our falling behind, Gleizer decided to post 2 one-hour-long lectures every Friday. On top of somewhat rushed, very long homework assignments, I found the content of this class very overwhelming. Gleizer actually managed to lose one entire lecture and part of another, and he didn't rerecord the content. He told us that some of the lost content wouldn't be on any exams, but it ended up being on the midterm. For the first midterm, he actually gave us less than a week's notice regarding when the exam would be, which I found inconsiderate. I guess while Gleizer is a very witty, passionate instructor, I can't help but admit I was disappointed with this class. Neither Gleizer nor his students could have known we would fall behind, but the rushed nature of this course, on top of the addition of extra lectures, made me feel I was forced to commit more time to this course than initially described. I unfortunately don't feel prepared for MATH 31B.

This was a pretty bad experience. The textbook on the professor's syllabus was different from the one on the Study List, so about half the class purchased the wrong textbook. It wasn't until Week 4 that we realized that some of us had the wrong one. The homework problems are all in the textbook, so a lot of us had to start over. He went too slow at the beginning of the class so he had to shove a bunch of information in the last few weeks. We didn't get to integrals until the end of Week 9. I was very close to dropping this class just because of how unprepared the professor was. It stressed me out much more than my other classes (I was taking 17 units). The homework is a lot and is meant to be spaced out, but a lot of the problems are harder than anything we went over in the lecture. He also made a lot of the homework due in the second half of the quarter because he took too long to cover the material. We didn't get the grade on our first homework until after the first midterm, so it was difficult to determine whether we grasped the concepts before the test. I don't really feel like I learned anything new in this class and it was disappointing overall. The professor clearly likes math, but I would recommend taking this class with someone else if you can.

This man kept making us learn how to be snipers. He would wake up each morning put on the same math pun tshirt and choose violence, telling us about his literal sniper training. He was really funny and a good lecturer. Terrible with tech, but he's a bit old so that is expected. He loves people to love math and if you go to his office hours he will chat for hours late into the night about the beauty of certain proofs.

A lot of work, very hards tests, he fell behind very quickly and wanted us to have extra weekly lectures for his downfall, and math department stopped him

This class was a logistical nightmare. As many other people have claimed before, the professor's pacing was so bad to the point that we went from covering one unit in 4 weeks to practically cramming 2 units in the last week. The method in which Prof Gleizer chose to teach was extremely ineffective as well, because he would write stuff on a whiteboard but his camera was constantly coming in and out of focus and so it was difficult to see what he was writing. he would also constantly go on long tangents while standing in front of the whiteboard. he wastes time emphasizing small (and honestly irrelevant) things, like kicking everyone out of lecture for not having their camera on, talking about why he doesn't believe in climate change, complaining about the american education system, etc.

In the end, he skipped more than an entire unit of class material because we "ran out of time". while Prof. Gleizer claimed to us that he fully prepared us for 31B, this in my opinion has not been true. Since he taught integration to us in like three days, he skipped over concepts like u-substitution, which is turning out to b crucial for 31b.

that said, I really appreciate the Prof's passion for math. He's not the best lecturer, but he seems to have endless patience for explaining hw problems in many different ways during office hours. He seems genuinely to be a kind person who wants us to do well. Due to the poor pacing and the textbook fiasco, he "bumped" everyones grade up by half a letter, which is quite generous. The 24-hour structure of the tests took the stress out of having to cram, and the tests themselves were pretty straightforwards too. at the end of the day, it wasn't that hard to get an A in this class. My TA (cecelia) was amazing, try to take this class w her if you can. Go to live lecture because Prof might lose the recording and refuse to rerecord. but honestly everything we needed could be found (better explained too) in the textbook, so don't be too worried lol.

Please try your hardest to not take this class with Gleizer. He was extremely disorganized this quarter and does not know how to pace the class. There were originally supposed to be 6 homeworks in total, but he ended up dropping the last one because he went too slow at the start of the quarter. He maintained his policy of dropping the lowest homework grade, so I did not end up doing the fifth hw as it was not included in my grade, so in total I turned in 4. However, each homework is INSANELY dense and has about 40 problems each. The questions are immensely more difficult than what he goes over in lecture, and are not very similar to what he puts on the midterms.

His lectures are basically useless as he goes off on tangents and focuses more on proofs than applications. I ended up skipping lecture entirely and just reading the book and doing the homeworks, which was far easier than trying to understand his lectures.

The only reason I got an A is because he changed the final to only focus on one single chapter instead of being cumulative, likely because he realized that he had not prepared his class adequately and scored would be poor if the final were to be cumulative.

I found his class quite hard despite the easy material that was presented. I was taking this class as a repeat and I was hoping to get a better grade. I found his pacing to be slow and we didn't get to cover all of the material in the course. I remember it took weeks for the first homework to be released, yet the latter homeworks were released as soon as the previous would finish. I also thought the amount of work per homework was too much. More than 40 questions on average per homework! Lots of the homework questions felt like filler and was there to bolster the amount of homework given instead of actually helping apply what we learned in class. For the final, he was not lenient at all as I experienced a storm in my area that stopped my internet so I couldn't turn in the final. Because of this, I failed the course completely as he wouldn't give me a small extension to turn in the test despite the situation being out of my control. Definitely recommend another professor to take this class with.
