Great class. The professor is clear and works well with the TA. The lectures and discussion go hand-in-hand and if you complete his worksheets then you will not need to dedicate extra time for the same course.
He also vouches for everyone to score higher so curving the grade is always on the table :)
Pros:
Great Professor. He cares about his students and structures the class in a way that our voices guide the quarter such as with deadlines, exams, etc. He is passionate about teaching and looking back I've learned so much from this course. I'm glad I got to meet Professor Neil and learn a ton for the course. Problem sets are the most important thing for this class. Understand how to do every single problem and you should be well prepared for exams.
TA was also helpful during office hours.
Cons:
Exams are 100% of your grade. If you get 70% on all exams you will get a C-! so be very careful and study hard!
TA sessions were recorded and provided from previous years and were difficult to understand/hear at times.
Overall great course and happy we have professors in the engineering department that care about the success of their students!
I love Dr. Lin. He was very considerate and from the week 1 he showed that he was invested in our learning and understanding. All of his polices supported his students, from fair exams to reasonable assignments to even the way he conducted lectures. He knew we cared about our grades but also wanted to teach us, and the vast majority of the students were successful not because the class was easy but because he was a good teacher. This class was far more similar to 33B than I was led to believe, and I find the differentiation between the two dubious at best. However Dr. Lin made the hassle of enrolling in a different diffeq class from my peers such a pleasurable experience.
Dr. Lin is not super adept at all things teachings. His lecture notes end up on BruinLearn but are not always easy to understand. Hie BruinLearn in general is not well setup, and he still has not uploaded concrete details about the extra credit project he assigned. When he asks us if we understand, it's occasionally rhetorical.
However, he makes up for those shortcomings with passion, kindness, and flexibility. I wish he had offered regular office hours because he's genuinely enjoyable to be around. Differential equations are advanced math topics, but he made them both easy and pleasurable. I would take many more classes with him if I could.
