I would 100% recommend taking English Comp 3 with Nathan! He is such an engaging professor and your writing will definitely improve through this class.

But with that being said, this class does have a pretty large workload (even online). In addition to a weekly mini-essay, reading journal, and peer feedback, there are two midterms (3/5 pages) and a final (10-12 pages). Even though we did do a lot of writing, no two essays were similar and none were overly daunting. We also had the opportunity to revise the midterms until the last day of class.

Nathan does a great job of communicating deadlines and the workload should never be too overwhelming as long as you time manage well. Lectures are dedicated to either discussing the reading for that week or other students mini-essays. Even though Nathan did a great job of adapting the class to an online format, I do wish that I was able to take this class in person just because of how small it is and how personal many of the essays are. I hope I can take another one of his classes in the future!

I LOVE PROFESSOR DEUEL!!! If you need your writing I requirement definitely try to get into Deuel's class! He's so nice, funny, and understanding. This class is really structured and you will have to write a mini-essay each Thursday night, which isn't that fun but you're given the prompts before so if you wanna go out on Thursdays, you just have to do it before. There's also a lot of reading/journaling. I normally hate English because I'm a stem major, but Deuel had me writing so much that it became easy for me. There are three major papers, two midterms and one final that all have a lot of creative freedom, so you can really write about whatever you want. I love love loved this class and was so happy I had Deuel my first quarter at ucla!!!

A great instructor, by far my favorite lecturer at UCLA. I always felt inspired to learn and I was always engaged in class, he brings the insightfulness and energy needed to be an educator. I'm truly grateful to have taken this course. If you put in the work (which you will), you will gain a greater confidence in your voice and your writing.

CLASS BREAKDOWN:

- Participation: 20%
- Weekly Mini-Essay: 10%

HOW THE CLASS WORKS:
Class happens every Tuesday and Thursday. On Thursday, we are assigned an abstract prompt (ex. why are you here?) and we have to write a single-spaced one-page "mini-essay" in regards to this prompt. This essay is due by the end of day on Thursday. It can be as formal or as informal as you want. There isn't like a very strict academic requirement to them as long as you write something. Then, he picks 5 essays to be shared with the class and he sends them out to everyone to review them. You write comments for each essay he sends out. On Tuesday, you go over your comments for the essays and give feedback to the authors of those pieces. After class ends on Tuesday, there is a section of a book (Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology) that you should write about in a "reading journal." This reading journal can be typed out or put into bullet points of your reaction to the text. On Thursday, you discuss the sections of the reading and the cycle repeats.

THE PAPERS:
There are 2 midterm essays. The first one is three pages and the second one is five pages, each one double spaced. The final paper is 10+ pages minimum, double spaced. All the papers were manageable, but DO NOT PUT THEM OFF UNTIL THE LAST SECOND. It takes some time to come up with a good idea that you want to write about for them, and he will help you come up with an idea if you email him one.

MY THOUGHTS:
As a South Campus person, I was scared to take any type of writing class, and I begrudgingly took this class as just another req to graduate. Man, did Prof. Deuel totally change that perception. This was a great class and Prof. Deuel made it a lot better. He is a great teacher, and I would totally recommend anyone to take this class with him. He takes the time to get to know you personally, which was such a refresher considering the blunt way that other professors deal with students. He writes comments about your writing and about you throughout the quarter. He really is a fantastic guy, who will genuinely make your writing a lot better. It is a decent amount of work at times because you have to write mini-essays, comments on the mini-essays, and the papers, but as long as you stay on top of things it is manageable. He is a big stickler for timeliness and he explicitly writes in his syllabus that he will not accept any late materials (unless you have talked about it with him before hand). You don't have to do anything remarkably amazing to get an 'A' in this class. Just do the work on time and participate in class, and you will do good. Highly recommend taking this class with him.

tldr: Prof. Deuel is amazing. Class is a decent amount of work, but if you stay on top of things you will most likely get an 'A'.

TAKE HIM! This is the only professor at UCLA that will actually care for you and your grade. His weekly readings are very short and interesting. The class consisted of weekly readings which were short and a one page journal writing about it. We had one mini essay a week about fun topics, for example "Judge Someone", you can literally write about anything, he is not like those annoying professors that make you write with a tedious rubric. Once everyone submitted their mini essay you would write a one page feedback (very easy). Final and midterms, you were free to use the readings he gave to you which were VERY easy to talk about. During his class, we mostly interacted with one another, I thought I would hate it at first but then I really liked it. Very fun and engaging professor! He honestly, truly cares about his students and always happy to help you! Lastly, he responds to his email very quickly! DON'T THINK TWICE, TAKE HIMMM!

Professor Deuel is the best writing professor I have ever met. He shows total respect for his students and is always willing to hear our voices. His teaching methods create an environment where we feel valued and encouraged to express ourselves.

One of the most remarkable aspects of his class is the weekly one-page mini essay assignment. This task allows us to write about whatever we want, often incorporating our personal experiences based on the given prompt. This freedom not only makes the assignments enjoyable but also helps us develop our writing skills in a meaningful way.

For both the midterm and final exams, Professor Deuel clearly specifies what he expects to see in our essays. Despite providing detailed guidelines, he also gives us ample freedom to explore our ideas and express ourselves creatively. This balance between structure and freedom is rare and highly appreciated.

In contrast to my previous experience taking this course in Fall 2023, where the professor's expectations were unclear and half of the class received a grade of C, Professor Deuel’s clear communication and supportive approach have made a significant difference. I ended up dropping the fall class due to the lack of guidance, but this summer, under Professor Deuel's instruction, I feel confident and inspired.

Overall, Professor Deuel’s approach to teaching writing has been the most effective and respectful I have encountered, even compared to instructors in my first language. His dedication to student success and his innovative teaching methods make him an outstanding educator.

This class has a great structure where you do the same short assignments on specific days every week. Beyond this you have a midterm and final paper. Professor Deuel gives a large range of what you can work with and how you can take your essays which is a great bonus. This class is full of conversations, critiques, and provides consistent learning opportunities. Deuel is a funny, interesting guy that makes the class experience much better than I would imagine Eng Comp 3 would be. This was probably my favorite class at UCLA, would definitely recommend. Also, do not let him convince you the class will be hard, just stick it out!

Take this class! I did not know what to expect from this class, considering my NSA chose it for me but I'm so glad chance allowed me to walk through the door of Deuel's classroom. I was bit nervous considering the fact that the class size was small with less than 25 students, but this class ended up being amazing! With a small class size, it enabled students to get to know each other more and engage more with the topics discussed. If you take this class be aware that every week you will write an essay on a creative new topic such as ''What is Truth'' and you will hear personal stories or essays from fellow students. I would highly encourage you to vocalize your own essay personal to your peers as it creates a bond between students when everyone shares something personal about themselves. But its a choice and essays from students range from being humorous, emotional, philosophical, or inspiring. Now to talk about Professor Deuel. Not to hype him up too much but he is the best professor that UCLA has! He always answers emails quickly, is a positive dude, and expects great things from students! Definitely a professor that is passionate on teaching and creating a environment where one can better their writing. Overall, this is a class that you will reminisce throughout your time at UCLA and one that you wish lasted longer than a quarter!

I took Professor Deuel's class fall of 2023 needing to fulfill my English GE after never having a good English teacher. That definitely changed after taking his class. Not only the best English teacher, but best overall teacher I have ever had! Yes, the mini essays were annoying to have to write on Thursday nights, but as time went on, I found myself looking forward to certain prompts, and even missing them after the course was over. The energy and environment that Nathan creates in his classroom is so warm and personable. I, along with many of my peers, felt comfortable enough to open up to 22 strangers. I came back months later to write this review because I genuinely miss this class and will forever be grateful that I took it. I became a way better writer and also kind of enjoy it now? Something else I love about this course is he lets you revise your midterm paper, which I think is one of the best ways to not only improve your grade, but actually learn from your mistakes and improve your writing! Anyways, take this class, I promise it may be annoying to do the weekly mini essays, but you will love it overall!!!!
