Fall 2020 - I would 100% recommend taking English Comp 3 with Nathan! He is such an engaging professor and your writing will definitely improve through this class. But with that being said, this class does have a pretty large workload (even online). In addition to a weekly mini-essay, reading journal, and peer feedback, there are two midterms (3/5 pages) and a final (10-12 pages). Even though we did do a lot of writing, no two essays were similar and none were overly daunting. We also had the opportunity to revise the midterms until the last day of class. Nathan does a great job of communicating deadlines and the workload should never be too overwhelming as long as you time manage well. Lectures are dedicated to either discussing the reading for that week or other students mini-essays. Even though Nathan did a great job of adapting the class to an online format, I do wish that I was able to take this class in person just because of how small it is and how personal many of the essays are. I hope I can take another one of his classes in the future!

Spring 2019 - Super great and interesting class. Be prepared to do some creative writing. The workload was fairly high for this course considering we were reading or writing most days of the week. Professor Deuel was very kind and helpful. Be sure to attend office hours. His selection of readings for the quarter were interesting and diverse. Professor Deuel pushed us to work hard but was always wiling to help and gave us the resources we needed to succeed. Overall, I would recommend this class, just be prepared for the work load.

Spring 2024 - This has been one of my favorite courses at UCLA! The class is definitely demanding, with multiple essays/assignments due each week, but if you are up for the challenge, it is so worth it. I truly believe my writing skills have improved over the course of the quarter, if not from his feedback (which, honestly, you don't get that much of), then from the sheer number of essays I wrote. The class is called Travel Writing, and the required readings have to do with travel, but the rest of the class is up for interpretation, which I really enjoyed. The only thing I wrote that falls under the category of traditional travel writing was my 12-page final. I loved the class and Professor Deuel as he was always available for questions and extremely encouraging! The class truly felt like a community, and we all got closer as the quarter progressed. Deuel is a true gem at UCLA.

Winter 2024 - Deuel is awesome. This is one of those classes that you've been looking for at UCLA--you learn a lot, the professor really cares about you as a person and also your success as a writer/student, you connect with other students in the class in an authentic and genuine way. Deuel really knows his stuff and has had an impressive career in journalism. He is eager to help you grow and connect within the writing and journalism field. Take it!!! You won't regret it!
