I have genuinely never met a group of more flexible and empathetic educators. The food cluster was a wonderful experience all 3 quarters of my freshman year; workload is manageable, exams are fair, and the writing assignments are explained very well and spaced out over the quarter, so as to make sure it's not being done at the last minute. I found the material to be interesting and engaging, and I think if you have an interest in sustainability you will find the same. What sets this cluster apart from any other class I've taken is how much the professors and TA's care about their students mental health, physical health, and overall well beings. Whether it was giving me an extension when I had a fever the night before a major assignment was due, or constantly doing mood check ins at the beginning of lecture, I honestly believe this team would go above and beyond to accommodate the needs of their students no matter the circumstance. I am so glad I took this class, as it gave me an amazing impression of UCLA and a ton of GE credits!
Also shoutout to Carlin, the best TA ever!!!

I gave all 5's because I HIGHLY recommend this cluster, however professor moana lacks some clarity in her presentation as they are kind of all over the place sometime, but overall she is very helpful if you have questions and is super nice. Also the info taught in her part of the cluster is very interesting and informative! (overall, i would highly recommend the food cluster, very interesting material if you are interested in sustainability and not way too much work like some of the other UCLA cluster classes).
The food cluster is hands down the best one if you need to fulfill science and/or social GE credits. It integrates both scientific and social issues beautifully and utilizes food as a way to study them. The class is so interesting because it applies to our everyday life as we eat food daily. Moana is a fantastic lecturer and is very hands-on. I was never bored in a class with her. The discussion sections are fairly easy for M1A. There are labs and a final research proposal that some may struggle with if they have never done one before. Lots of participation and group work is involved (virtually everything is in a group, even 2 of the exams). The workload is super manageable and the exams are easy and open-note. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Perfect class. Learned a lot, really enjoyed it, great and helpful Professor, very straightforward exams. If you show up to class, or even just read the uploaded slides, you will get an A in this class for sure. Easily my favorite class I've taken so far, really fun and very interesting information.
If you are looking for a cluster to take... take the food cluster! It is by far the easiest and most fun! For this professors section of the class she actually brought in some interactive stuff for us just for fun. Her lectures were well layed out and super informative, you learn alot about water that if useful to life and I think eyeryone should know, so if you are interesting in envi sci take this. I also appreciate that her part of the cluster didnt have much group work.
(i will add, that while this specific professor did not give out work, the discussion section for this cluster does have quite quite a few projects and group work, but that is to be expected for a 6 credit class)
I give all 5s to this class. Interesting, easy, never stressful. I never didn't want to go to this class, I actually enjoyed it. Moana's section was about water for us, and the exams were easy.
