Professor Lu is an amazing and engaging lecturer. He provides extremely detailed notes and you do not need the textbook at all. He gives very useful advice about recruiting/CPA exams as well, very helpful and organized professor. This is a hard, but doable class. You just need to study and put in the work.
Because of COVID, the exams were online and through Connect, so you have to buy it to take the exam. Exam are open book because they couldn't get funding for examity, but both the midterm and the final were only an hour long so you won't have much time.
Grading Breakdown:
4% Accounting fundamentals quiz (super easy)
40% Midterm
56% Final
Professor Lu is a fantastic professor who truly cares about student learning. Even though this class was fully online due to Covid, he was very organized and responsive. His office hours were right after the live lecture class, which was helpful if people had questions about the material we learned that day. He provides very well structured lecture notes with ample amounts of practice problems and examples with a few recommended homework problems for each chapter. Classes consisted of live lectures where he would go over the lecture notes, often interjecting humorous anecdotes or jokes that directly related to the material and helped us learn. We had to get Connect in order to take exams, but reading the textbook is unnecessary beyond familiarizing yourself with different account names. Although the material can be somewhat difficult, Professor Lu does a great job of explaining important concepts and it directly corresponds with CPA exam topics.
The class was made up of a quiz on accounting fundamentals (4%), one midterm (40%), and the final (56%). Exams were extremely fair and only tested on concepts from lectures, but were still somewhat rigorous. The exams were open note, which was helpful but you have to know the material since there isn't enough time to check your study guide for every question.
Professor Lu was also extremely helpful with recruiting and questions about CPA licensure. He has a YouTube channel called "ACCOUNTING IS FOR YOU" with many helpful videos about careers in accounting, CPA licensure, and tips on recruiting, and he would also happily answer questions during office hours or schedule time to talk outside of class.
Overall, Professor Lu is a fair and highly engaging professor, and I would strongly recommend taking this (and other) classes with him.
Intermediate Accounting is a difficult course to teach as it covers various (specialised) topics; nevertheless, Professor Lu taught the material with exceptional mastery, care, and understanding. He weaves in hilarious personal anecdotes to help students retain complex concepts and always welcomes students to voluntarily participate in live lectures so that I always looked forward to showing up at the 8:30am lectures. The lecture notes are meticulously organised, detailed, straightforward, easy to understand, and structurally aesthetic - without making people tear their hair out or inducing insomnia. Exams align beautifully with the lecture notes so students know what to expect and can thus prepare accordingly. Exam questions allow students to fairly demonstrate mastery of course material. The material is specifically selected to correspond with key CPA exam topics. Additionally, while there are no TAs during summer sessions, Professor Lu holds office hours after each lecture and also additional office hours the evening before the exam and 15 minutes before the exam to ensure that all questions are answered. He explains answers patiently and always makes sure that students' questions are fully answered before moving on. Furthermore, he is happy to chat with students about recruiting, internships, investing, careers, etc. Professor Lu is a stellar example of a professor who truly enjoys teaching students. His teaching reflects an exemplary mode of instruction in which students are rewarded for their academic progress, given the opportunity to improve, and encouraged to learn from their mistakes in a constructive way rather than through a permanently demolished GPA. I truly appreciate having been a part of an interactive and caring little community while also feeling that the trajectory of my progress was completely within my control.
Professor Lu is a great professor with clear guidelines on how the class is taught. The class consisted of 4% quiz, 40% midterm, and 56% final. He teaches the material in an engaging way and his notes are formatted by subject, which I appreciate. There is no textbook needed, but you do need to purchase access for Connect to complete extra problems (optional) and to take the exams for this course.
I genuinely enjoyed Management 120B with Professor Lu. Despite 120B having a reputation for being one of the hardest classes in the accounting minor, Prof. Lu made learning the subject a lot more manageable and enjoyable. He clearly puts a lot of effort into ensuring that every student can keep up with the class no matter how much you may or may not remember from the foundational accounting classes.
Moreover, Professor Lu bases his midterm and final exclusively on the contents of his lecture notes, which saves you from having to read the horribly dry textbook (I’d know since I read it anyways, and trust me nothing on the textbook that isn’t on the lecture notes was ever covered in the exams). The lecture notes themselves were really clear and well organized, making referencing them during study really easy. As an additional bonus, Prof. Lu focuses his classes on the material that will actually be covered on the CPA exams and is more than willing to give advice on how to further a career in accounting, in fact he has his own Youtube channel for it—https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDpwk_iweyZkEdP7GT41Hkw.
His lectures themselves are really engaging, as he does his best to make the dull material come to life with jokes and anecdotes. He’s also very approachable with questions and he happily put up with my endless inquiries about largely irrelevant edge cases. Overall, I feel that you gain the most by going to lectures and rereading the lecture notes after class. As long as you do all the assigned practice questions and redo the question within the notes themselves (not that many mind you, only about 40 or so total for the whole quarter—I counted—each taking around 5-10 minutes to do) you will do really well in his class.
I can’t recommend this professor enough for 120B, the learning environment is great and Professor Lu genuinely tries to make sure everyone has their best shot at getting an A. He was very accommodating for the finals for Spring 2020, as he made the final exam very fair given the circumstances—look it up for dem younglings who don’t remember.
Mr. Lu is an incredibly helpful and straightforward teacher. He bases the midterm and final based on his lecture notes, so I wouldn't bother getting the textbook. His tests are very straightforward, but the downside is that he can test on anything in his notes which are quite lengthy. To do well on his tests, make sure to study his notes and do the practice problems in them repeatedly. Mr. Lu also helps a lot with recruiting, such as preparing you for the career fair, networking you with the right people and giving extra resources for the CPA exam. Overall, an excellent teacher that will teach you what you need to know and in the simplest way possible.
Prof. Lu is an extremely engaging lecturer. He is always in an uplifting mood, and cracks jokes throughout lecture which makes the boring course material a little better. His class itself is not as difficult as other people say, as long as you spend a good amount of time on his lecture notes, you will be fine. So make sure you understand EVERYTHING in his notes. Don't read the textbook, bc you're wasting your time. His notes are actually more useful than the textbook. He summarizes everything you need for his tests in the notes and his test questions are straight out lecture notes. Save his notes for CPA exams too! Study ahead and don't wait until the day before the midterm bc you will not be able to remember everything.
Took this class Fall 2018 after taking Prof Lu during summer for 120A.
The best part about this class would be how organized everything was, and that there were no textbooks needed at all. All the notes were typed manually by the professor, and had everything we would need to study for the class and the CPA exam! Prof Lu also gave us a lot of tips for the CPA exam, letting us know which topics would be tested vs. not tested in the exam. He was super encouraging and urged all his students to take the exam. On top of that, he gave students lots of practical work tips, even giving references for students who did well in his class.
The class was difficult, which was expected, but I felt that I was able to go to the professor with any questions I had. I was able to do pretty well in the midterm, but got overwhelmed by all my other classes for the final, so I ended up with an A- in the end. The trick to do well in exams is to study his typed notes religiously. Most of the questions are directly based off of the notes, and it forces you to understand everything in the notes.
Would definitely recommend taking this class with Prof Lu! So glad I took him for both 120A and 120B.
Prof. Lu is a very engaging lecturer who pays close attention to the details that really prepare you for the CPA exam. I also had him for Mgmt 120A, and his notes were always clear, well-organized, and easy to follow. I highly recommend keeping those notes, as they will be a really helpful resource when you’re studying for the CPA exams.
Also don’t let the class's grade distribution intimidate you. Although the tests are challenging, Prof. Lu covers all the material in depth during lectures, so if you attend lectures and put in the work, you will be well-prepared. Don’t be discouraged by your first midterm grade either. Accounting is a skill that improves with practice. Prof. Lu truly cares about his students and is always available for support, whether it’s for accounting help or career guidance.
Overall, I really recommend taking him for the intermediate accounting series. His teaching helps you build a strong foundation in accounting, and he is always approachable if you have any questions along the way.
Professor Lu is amazing. He is extremely passionate about teaching and his students greatly benefit as a result. While this is a very challenging course - one of the hardest courses in the accounting minor - he accommodates his students in any way he can through things like access to TAs, office hours, fair exams, and extensive career advice. I am very grateful for my experience with Professor Lu as I have gained an invaluable set of accounting skills and am now on an excellent career path due to his teaching and much of his advice. I highly recommend this class to anyone as the professor truly cares about his students. I wish I could take him for all of my classes here at UCLA!
