Professor Nasiali is by far my favorite teacher at UCLA! Her midterms and finals were both take-home papers, which relieved a lot of the stress of them being in-class, and as long as you attended class, it would be difficult to do poorly. She is extremely engaging and I truly looked forward to attending her class each week. The readings are not overwhelming for the class, and although a couple of them were a bit difficult to understand, as long as you get the gist of them, you'll do just fine.
Professor Nasiali is very nice and helpful but grades extremely harshly. I followed her advice and went to office hours each week, applying what she told me to improve my writing, but each week she gave me the same low grade. Very disappointed with the class in general and how unnecessarily difficult this class was.
I really liked Professor Nasiali and her class. This was my first class with her and I took a different class with her again after this class as well. This isn't an easy A but she is a very helpful professor and the class was interesting. This was an online class due to covid and it was structured as a hybrid class. She posted recorded lectures every week (they weren't too long and very engaging with powerpoint slides). It was pretty easy to follow along with her lectures and pay attention. Then on Thursday mornings we would have a zoom discussion about the assigned reading for that week (and she also used that time to talk about the midterm/final and for people to ask questions). You do get graded on participation and you should try to participate on Thursdays but on her syllabus it said if you could not make to to the Thursday discussions to email her and she could work something out for you to still be able to get a good participation grade. The readings were pretty long and dense but usually interesting. The midterm and final were both papers (I think the midterm was 5-6 pages and the final was 7-8) and you had to use the readings and lectures to answer the question. She does grade them kinda tough but if you go to office hours before they are due she will definitely help you form ideas. She really likes it when your writing is polished and likes it when you revise your essay a lot. There was also a project that was due toward the end of the quarter and you had to submit a paragraph about your project topic at the beginning of the quarter. The project was on a product (such as chocolate or soap) and you had to research its colonial history (find outside sources) and then either make a blog post or a podcast about it.
Expect to get graded harshly on your papers so make sure you get started on them early and go to office hours/the writing center
Professor Nasiali is knowledgeable, engaging, responsive, and friendly. Her lectures were all so well organized (each week was themed around a different object). This class was a super fresh and interesting perspective on European history, which I didn’t know existed (I have taken so many Euro courses that I didn't think I could possibly ever find it interesting). I was prepared to be bored by endless droning about the French Revolution but instead the Prof explained relevant themes that connected Europe with the rest of the world, and the past with the present. The first hand sources were well chosen and even the textbook felt relevant. I took this class as an easy GE (I'm a senior who has finished both of my majors) but I actually really enjoyed it and would rank this class in my top ten UCLA classes ever taken. Can't recommend this prof enough, definitely worth my time.
Professor Nasiali is an amazing lecturer and a wonderful person. She always comes to the class with a positive energy which is infectious. Her lecturing style is extremely engaging, and the classes are always so informative and multi-dimensional. The readings she assigns are very interesting and well connected. This class will definitely increase your analytical skills.
If you go to her office hours to go over your assignments, your writing will improve SO MUCH! I cannot stress this enough. Her feedback is extremely helpful and constructive; I owe a lot to her. She is really encouraging, understanding, and the nicest person ever.
She is one of the best professors at UCLA, so do yourselves a favor and take one her classes.
Hands down, one of the best professors at UCLA.
Professor Nasiali is one of the best lecturers here. Take a course with her and you will genuinely develop an interest in history. Her slides were always well prepared. She promotes class discussions even in lectures as big as 200 people, and often takes a keen interest in her students, by making the effort to remember their names. She is also very receptive to creativity and conflicting opinions, and never imposes that her way is the only way. I would highly highly recommend this professor, even if you hate history (like me :P).
I'm not the biggest fan of history, and I had a really bad enrollment time so I was mad that this was one of the last options available to take for a GE. However, this class didn't turn out to be that bad. The professor was really kind and her lectures were interesting, but I do admit that sometimes I was too tired to pay attention (that was on me though). There weren't any tests for the course which was great, the midterm and final were essays (I do not recommend procrastinating on these). I think mainly the grading comes down to your TAs. Overall, I didn't mind the class; it wasn't the easiest but it wasn't difficult either, it's manageable if you're not overloading yourself with extremely hard classes.
This class was amazing! I felt professor nassali was such an interesting lecturer and I walked out of class feeling like I had learned so much everytime. Class was really based in on a midterm essay and a final essay where you are analyzing primary sources. There’s also a final project which can be a podcast or blogpost on a contemporary issue you’re passionate about. Then participation grade. I loved this class so much and definitely suggest it!
