THE WORST CLASS AT UCLA!! this professor doesn't care about you AT ALL! He is arrogant, a hard a** grader for no reason! he doesn't even grade our work, it's all up to the TA. he expects you to know 500+ concepts for each exam! this class is unfair and this professor is so conservative it makes me want to gag. the only regret I have at UCLA was having him as my professor.
He was very unflexible and not understanding during the pandemic and riots. He is an extremely hard grader and complicates things when you ask him for help.
Although you'll learn a lot in this class, YOUR GPA WILL BE LOWERED
Suman is clear, nice and funny but such a harsh grader. Tests are extremely difficult and long (especially during quarantine with online classes). Suman also has no consideration for his students' mental health – he only cares about the "academic integrity of the class". If you're already a comm major and really wanna work in the field of marketing or such you should definitely take this class cause it's fun and very applicable to the real world, but if you're trying to do well or find an easy class do yourself a favor and run away from this class.
If i'm being totally honest, don't risk it. So many better professors at UCLA, he is just too arrogant and unwilling to work with students. Good luck trying to reason with him. He does not care if you understand class material, you can connect every answer with the correct question yet still not do well on his tests. He grades you based on some obscure 'key' that only he and his TA have access to. I think he writes it like the day before or something. Like honestly, every answer can be correct, yet he will mark you off because it is not worded close enough to this mystical key which he creates. Just save yourself some worry!
While the note taking is still just as important as it was in Comm 10, 140 is so much easier and interesting. And while there is a lot of reading for this class, the workload is weak compared to other classes at UCLA that require students to do much more than basically just read books. I will say though that it is almost vital to your grade to pair up with another student and split the readings, there are two books (both thin and both actually fun to read). He asks you to watch 2 films, just get them done earlier rather than later. AND *this is important* make yourself a table of contents for your notes for both the midterm and final (they're open note). Another great thing is that Suman is willing to review your midterm with you and give you points if he thinks your answers were actually decent. Last thing I want to say is that if you're concerned that this class is going to be too hard/boring, don't be. The class is interesting/useful and the workload is very do-able.
This class was super manageable as long as you start reading the first week and slowly take your notes for the midterm and final. You are allowed to bring in as many notes as you want for the tests, so I brought in my class notebook and just made a table of contents for main ideas in my notes so that it was time-efficient since the midterm has a time constraint. I thought this class was super useful because it teaches you how to be persuasive in everyday life and in your career. Suman is a great and understanding professor, he gave me the points my midterm deserved when the TA graded it wrong. Overall, not that hard as long as you just take reading notes because you don't have to study a lot/remember a bunch for the tests (since you have your notes).
Alright, here's the deal
If you're tryna learn something while you're at UCLA, take Suman
Yea ok, his classes are hard and you have to take a lot of notes but I actually learned relevant things in this class as opposed to other wack comm classes I have taken.
He's an old school guy who is a great at teaching the material, rather than just showing slides.
Suman is low-key the best professor at UCLA , dont @ me
This is a tough class with a lot of time-consuming work. With that said, the readings (even though they take FOREVER) are probably the most interesting I've had at UCLA. It really is cool, relevant material. But tests are difficult and take so much time to prepare for that my other classes suffered as a result. Idk. I spent more time on this class than all my others combined and, despite that, received a lower grade than in the others so do with that what you will
