This was an awesome class! Professor Puopolo is really engaging, which is great considering the lecture starts at 7 pm and goes on until 10 pm. He is the senior VP of international television research for Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution while he teaches here- so we got a lot of inside and current information about the film industry. To do well in this class, you've got to be attentive and willing to participate during lecture and discussion (he encourages participation during lecture by asking questions that are not rhetorical). There are 3-question quizzes at the beginning of every lecture and they go toward your grade. The questions are based on the readings and presentations. The readings are always interesting and not very long, so it isn't too bad.
Very prolific research analyst from FOX who happens to teach at UCLA on the side because he cares and wants us younger folk to become informed of the industry we'll soon "inherit." Puopolo is very knowledgeable. He tries to get you to become more conscious and keep up with the business side of the entertainment/tech industries and to critically think how they strategize and make money. Very engaging class. You will learn a lot, especially about contemporary entertainment business politics, how companies rise and fall, and what sort of surprises might be around the corner. This class is gold.
