The professor is all right. The class information was interesting. The discussions were good. when the professor says he tests on everything he means he tests on everything, even things he didn't go over. the tests were multiple choice. there is a clearly labeled LECTURE questions sections, and a BOOK READINGS and DISCUSSION questions section. READ THE BOOK, no joke. if you do all the readings, go to discussions, and lectures, you can easily get an A.

I really enjoyed this class. It encouraged me to change my major to psychobiology. It is not easy, but you'll definitely learn something if you take this course!

Professor Fanselow is undoubtedly one of the best professors at UCLA. I'll be honest this course is pretty difficult, but you'll probably have to take it eventually depending on the core classes available. If you must take this course take it with Fanselow! Also make good use of his office hours. There he will take the time to go over specific questions that you have which clarify things ten fold. He's really committed to the students if you show that your putting forth a good effort. The course is structured with 2 midterms, a paper, and a final which is NOT cumulative. The paper will help your grade if your first two exam scores are not very good, but try to get a really good score on the first exam and the rest of the class will be less stressful. The book material is a good supplement but is not entirely necessary if you seriously study the lecture material.
Actually, the book is only good for some broad topics that are directly tested on the exam. So basically if you read the book you'll get those questions correct.
Professor Fanselow is by far the best teacher for this material so take it with him!
Good luck!

Fanselow is a really good teacher. His lectures make sense and he is pretty funny. His tests are really really hard. After getting an average grade on both midterms I committed myself more to studying for the final and got an A+ on the exam. If you read ALL the assigned book pages and review the lecture notes completely you can't go wrong in this class.

Two thumbs up for 110 with Fanselow. The best class I ever took in my life. I learned the stuff that I'll remember for life rather than forget right after the final. If your only goal is simple and smooth class with an easy A in the end - it is probably not a good idea to take Fanselow. His tests are pretty hard, and you have to be on top of the material to get a good grade. Don't put it off till the last night before the test. Read the book, go to Fanselow's office hours, lectures, and you'll be fine. I enjoyed his lectures a lot, they're interesting and engaging, and you actually have to stay awake and pay attention, because he does not use ppt slides (he is definately not a slacker, he puts a lot of effort into lecturing). Don't be scared by all the reviews that say that it is an insanely hard course. It is sort of hard, but you won't regret taking it.

Fanselow is not great. He is a dry lecturer, who thinks he is smarter than everyone else. There are three tests, all noncumulative, and an easy paper that wont help or hurt your grade, but the tests are difficult. He will tell you that they are not detailed tests, but that they are testing on concepts. That is true. He will not test you on needless details. BUT the stuff he does test you on IS made to be tricky. After one exam he said, "I knew most of you would get this question wrong, but I decided to put it on anyway to separate those who really know their stuff from those who do not." Well, something like 85% of the class got it wrong. Anyway, there is always a big curve because the tests are difficult. There is definately room for imporvement as far as his teaching style goes. GO TO DISCUSSIONS. The TAs help a lot because his style of teaching is not very helpful.

I took Fanselow's Psych 110 and i must say that even though it was tough, i thoroughly enjoyed it. Make sure you go to everything, lecture, discussion and read the book! His tests are made up of all of those. The cool thing about Fanselow is that he doesn't test on memorization but actual learning. You have to understand the concepts to do well. I highly recommend him but if you're looking for an easy grade you probably wont be too happy because his tests are tough. Other than that he's a great professor!

i enjoyed this class. fanselow not only knows his stuff(some of his experiments are cited in the textbook) but is a great lecturer and makes the material interesting and is very straightforward. The lecture notes were also extremely helpful because the course TA was doing them. i never went to his office hours but he seemed very concerned about students in class. all that said, this class is hard. his exams are very tricky. you must do the reading and make sure you take notes on it because his questions on the reading are very detailed. you are expected to apply concepts as well. i do not think an A is impossible like others have stated(maybe because i got one)but you are going to have to work for it.

I took his class the first quarter at UCLA after I transferred from community college.
His lecture was very fun, and he's no doubt that he's concerned about students' learning.
But as many people mentioned, his exam was so hard.
You need to not only understand the concept but also have to apply your knowledge to your real life example.
It was hard, so it's very up to you whether to take his class or not.

Probably the best class I have ever taken in my life. Unfortunately, his tests were suicide which devalued my perception upon the class. I loved studying for this class, I loved listening to his lectures, but I absolutely HATED his tests! His tests are extremely confusing...EXTREMELY HARD!!! I thought I would take up the challenge after reading the reviews and thought I would be an exception. Although I got a 110% on the second midterm I still got a B+ in the class. This upset me because I really loved the material. If an A is extremely important to you, I wouldn't recommend this class. Otherwise, it is a very interesting class and you will gain a lot of valuable knowledge.
