Professor Lofchie is a nice man and his class was okay. His lectures are long and he sometimes goes on a tangent. I wish his slides correlated more with his lecture as he would often jump back and forth. between different slides. Your grade is based only on two 800-word papers. The midterm is worth about 33% of your grade and your final is worth about 66% of your grade. However, this was not clear till after our midterm was graded so I wish he gave us more clarity on that. Go to office hours, he may give you extra credit. There is assigned reading every week that does not take too long, but to be honest, I stopped reading during the last 4 weeks and did fine on the final. I am not sure if he did this to everyone but he did bump my grade from an A- to an A without me asking. Overall a good class, as long as you put in the work!
Okay this professor is sweet. He enjoys what he teaches and I really admire that. I will be brutally honest and say I was not engaged in the lectures and I did find them slow and boring. This does not mean he is a bad professor. If I had been interested in the subject more I probably would have enjoyed the class more. Unfortunately this quarter had a TA that was notoriously known to be a tough grader. I genuinely think had she not been the TA, I would have gotten a better grade in the class. Only two things are grades, the midterm and the final. Nothing else. If your grade is in the hands of a tough grader, you might not do as well. If you take this class just pray there is a TA that is lenient on grading. He gives us three questions two days before the exam and he chooses one for us to answer the day of the tests.
I felt that his lectures were often boring but I think Lofchie is a nice man who admitted he was a "mush grader," so if you're looking for an easy A this is it. I did all the sometimes heavy readings and went to every class but many of my classmates didn't and still did well. I think he is a good teacher but I just was not interested in the subject.
