Actually took J70 The class was quite interesting to me. The workload was not that hard as weekly assignments could be done quickly in about 10-15 minutes after you watched a movie. The readings were at times dry but the films were inspiring. The professor showed an obvious passion for the subject and it was quite refreshing. Take this class, I quite enjoyed it.

Fall 2024 - Exceptionally easy GE, and fun as well, if you're interested in anime. Took this class not knowing much about anime (maybe watched one in the past) but came out with a new appreciation for Japanese animation. Emmerich is very passionate about Japanese as a field, though perhaps not so much Anime, as I found his lecturing to be slightly dull. Classes were not necessary to attend, though they did start taking attendance later on I believe (or at least threatening to). Classes were essentially just a large class discussion where he asks students to participate. He does not do traditional lectures with slides. Discussions were mandatory. Grades consist solely of a midterm and final paper, and 5 discussion posts scattered throughout the weeks. Very easy grading (at least my TA) and overall quite interesting to analyze anime. Though one downside would be that the anime we focus on are not your typical anime that you may find interesting: the only "popular" anime that we watch is Your Name, everything else is quite old. This class is more of an analyzing the historical development of anime than a comprehensive review of modern anime.
