TAKE ANDREWS HE IS AWESOME!!! He is one of the best prof I have ever had in ucla if not the best. He really cares about students, giving a lot of office hours. You can find HW TYPE problems in both midterms and finals so honestly if you put work on it you will be fine. TAKE HIM!!! I took Sudesh for Math 31A and honestly, he is great as well, but he really loves conceptual questions, which is way different from HW. Compared to Sudesh, Andrews is a very standard math professor and if you look for learning something as well as an easy B, take him! (Sorry I just got B cause his final is easy and I lose point on a question exactly come from the HW)

Andrews' lectures are funny & engaging. His tests can be challenging, but only because he wants to ensure that we've mastered the material (rather than just memorizing some formulae). TAs are usually great, HW is time-consuming but it helps a lot when you're prepping for the final. Also, he has notes uploaded for most topics, which are helpful (especially if you haven't been to class).

Andrews is a great professor. I liked him much better than Conley, and I had Conley for 31A.

His midterms aren't that bad (He will tell you which topics to study, usually 4 separate topics). Just do alot of practice from the textbook, and when you feel comfortable with the topic of interest, use his past midterms (which he will give) to measure how ready you actually are. Doing this, I pulled a 97.5 on the first midterm, and a 91 on the second midterm.

His final though... He mixes a bunch of concepts in one problem, and that final was genuinely the hardest test I've EVER taken in my life. Only 1 person got an A (91), and the average was a 57. I pulled a 64 and walked away with an A in the class, so, I guess the lesson here is to just be better than the average. Grades are assigned based on the percentile you are in the class. (Top 2 students get an A+)

Oh, and his grading scheme.
1. 25% Midterm 1, 25% Midterm 2, 10% Homework, 40% Final.
2. 20% Better Midterm, 10% Homework, 70% Final.

WARNING: DO NOT COUNT ON USING THE FINAL TO SAVE YOU, THAT WILL NOT WORK. STUDY HARD FOR BOTH MIDTERMS, AND LET THE FINAL WEIGH 40%. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Top notch professor though, I wish he was teaching the 32 series.

Final is so hard!!! Both midterms were easy but i barely passed finals with a 60. But, he curved the grade so i got a b instead of a c. Do not expect to use the second marking scheme using one midterm and finals. Focus on infinite series.

Michael is the most amazing professor I've ever had. His lectures are great. He breaks up every concept into steps and instead of using jargon he actually words stuff in basic terms. He even described a component of the infinite series (31B) as "a drunk friend" or for the Squeeze Theorem he'll see "use it when stuff looks ugly." I definitely recommend this class. Perks of Michael specifically involve how accurate his practice midterms are. Please take his class.

Hands down one of the best professors in UCLA! Definitely recommend to take class with him if you can! Here are the several reasons why I like him so much:
1. His lectures are really funny, concise and clear. He does not try to scare you with those horrible, but somewhat useless mathematical proofs, like a lot of other professors do. Honestly speaking, there has not been a single time that I felt confused or bored during Andrew's lectures.
2. I also like how he coordinates with the TAs. Apparently the TAs for his class knows what's going on during lectures. Also I think the professor will discuss with the TAs what questions should appear in the final. I think this is a very good way to prevent the tests from being too deviated from what we learned.
3.He is hardworking. I think he has comparably more office hours than many other professors. Also I remember before the final he would hold review sessions 2-3 hours a day and 3 days in a row? He would post questions and answers for practice and actual midterms and finals on his website(which is pretty amazing since a lot of teachers just forget about us after the final...) Finally he is really fast in answering piazza question lol
4. A lot of people said his final is hard. But I actually like it because it requires a little bit of thinking but is totally doable as long as you know ur stuff.

ANDREWS IS AMAZING. I took him because Conley's class was full and I read the reviews for Andrews and they did not seem to do him justice. Tbh they protrayed him as an average professor but he is far from that. He is engaging, funny, helpful, boy GENIUS I swear he's Jimmy friggen Neutron. He gets along with students so well he easily blends in with them. His TAs are very helpful and they are so funny together. Personality-wise Andrews is amazing, you will love him you will find his lectures interesting and you won't be intimidated by him. He solely cares about a students learning and he goes above and beyond to help.
As for the class, lol..... I suck at math but he makes everything so easy to understand! Although personally I didn't do too well on exams, I genuinely understood the material, if that makes sense. His office hours are helpful and he is so welcoming.
The first midterm was easy, the second midterm not so much.
The final though........... Don't even count on finishing early because he makes sure you will last the ENTIRE 3 hours taking the test. It was pretty hard, like it was so hard it seemed simple. Then you get your result back and you're like .....ooops! But he provides practice midterms and finals for you to use to study.
Overall, I think you definitely should take Andrews!!!!!!! You will love him and his British accent and quirky jokes. I don't think my review even does him justice because he's just SO cool. He is my favorite professor at UCLA by far. I would definitely take a class with him again I hope I do in the futurw!!!!

Andrews is definitely the best math professor I've had at UCLA. He's a terrific lecturer, keeps you awake at 8:00am, pretty funny, and clearly explains concepts that are known to be difficult in Math 131A. When you are having trouble with any concept, he is more than happy to help you out during his office hours. You can tell he really cares about his students' learning and is very passionate about teaching.

I really enjoyed his grading layout of no homework and no midterms. Your grade depends entirely on 4 quizzes and the final. The quizzes are structured in a way that force you to stay up to speed in the course and are graded harshly, BUT, you are rewarded heavily for learning from mistakes on your quizzes and performing well on the final. Basically, points missed on your quizzes doesn't dock your grade but determines how much of your grade is determined by the final.

Regarding the final, Andrews tried a new thing this quarter where a written final made up 75% of the final and if you scored above 70% on the written final (which I think a little over a third of the class did) you got an oral final. He gives you the problems of the oral final before-hand, so you know exactly what to prepare, and he helps you out A LOT during the actual oral final through hints and suggestions. To do well in the class, you gotta stay caught up and really understand all of the lectures and quiz preparation problems because there is no homework that forces you to turn work in. Take advantage of his office hours and learn from your mistakes on quizzes because the final is really what your grade comes down to.

Andrews is a decent professor. He does this best at making math interesting. However, his tests are very difficult and are much more complex than the problems he assigns for homework. Also, homework problems can get very difficult and it is graded so you want to somehow find the correct answers. I found office hours to not be that helpful as sometimes my question would not even be answered due to the volume of students who went. The tests are extremely difficult and the averages are around a 60%. Be ready for a hard class but not impossible.

I never write a review for any professor before. I took math 31B with Michael ANDREWS in my first fall quarter here. As a Chinese, I feel I am so lucky to have him as my math teacher. Math 31B is the only pure math class I have taken here and I really learned a lot, not only from the class material but also the professor himself.
