unfortunately, all these other reviews are still true about this professor. she's still unclear, rude and condescending towards students. she refused to post the slides, claiming that plenty of other professors do the same, making this class inaccessible to lots of students.

the only good thing that came out of this class was that she was open to someone's suggestion about doing 'self grading' for the course, so that took a lot of pressure off of everyone. i'm sure everyone got As

Women's Movements in Latin America has been that eye opening course this past fall quarter that has kept me very motivated and enthusiastic about my studies in my Latin American Studies major. Although the class had a lot of readings and course materials to dive into, Professor Blackwell was sure to include them into her lectures and class discussions. The class tied very well to the relevant research and experience that the professor had gone through. Some weaknesses generally surround the structure of the class topics. Although women's movements in Latin America did bring up relevant and important gender, racial, sexual, and reproductive issues to perspective, ONE course is just not enough to cover everything! I'm really afraid I will never be able to dive into the topics we discussed in class ever again because of the few Chicano/a studies courses that surround these issues, and most importantly on the low number of professors who have actually interacted and dedicated their lives to advocating for these communities affected by them.

If you're looking for an easy A with little to no readings, this class is not for you.

Professor Blackwell is direct and blunt and can tell when you haven't done the readings/topics or have been trying to BS your work. She calls you out.

I was super busy this quarter and wish I would have gone to her office hours, mainly because I know she really cares about you passing the class.

She is very approachable, offers extra credit assignments, and understands that you're a student first!

She’s the kind of professor you either LOVE or absolutely HATE. I personally DISLIKE her. She is RUDE & Condescending. And no I’m not hating, or one of those students that sits at the back of the room on Facebook, expecting to get an A. I’ve gotten A+’s in BOTH of the classes I’ve taken with her. I do the work & get the A. But besides the grading aspect, she does not know how to teach. She lectures, puts everyone to sleep & then expects people to participate after she shuts them up with rude remarks. She cuts ppl off constantly & puts people on the spot for no reason. it’s like she gets a power-high from making ppl feel like shit in her class. Unfortunately she just got tenured so UCLA will have her till she died. WACK.
BTW. her book is a JOKE. I read it & I know people who say that she copied & paste other ppls work & didn’t give them credit. All the Chicana feminist at UCLA know she’s a B&%$#%& for stealing peoples work.

Anywhooooo.. I don’t want to sound more rude than I already did, but if your considering taking her class, sign up & then sign up for another class so you have a back up class if you need to drop her. Get ready for the ride tho!

This professor is one of the WORST I ever had at UCLA and I am a senior so I have had many professors during my tenure. She is extremely condescending and does not create an atmosphere that is conducive to students learning abilities and vulnerability. Many times during student presentations she would interrupt students mid thought to exert her own opinion. Furthermore, the work load is a little extensive and the boring lectures in class does not assist you in seeing the main premise in the readings. I took this class not for a requirement but because I was interested in the topic since it was out of my major scope. I really wish I did not take the class.
If you ever take this class. GOOD-LUCK! !!!

PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! She was extremely rude to her students throughout the whole quarter. She constantly interrupts during student presentations and rushes you through them. She does not seem really invested in her students learning more than she is throwing tons, and I mean TONS, of reading assignments at you. At first I was excited about taking this course because it was my first women's course at UCLA, but I'm sad to say that although the material was very interesting, Professor Blackwell was a real disappointment. Hope this helps!!
