Fall 2022: Pretty fair class. Lectures are recorded. Tests are online and open note but theres not enough time to look through your notes bc of the 75 min time limit for the midterms. Class averages were about 78% on both midterms and about 84% on the final I believe. I would recommend doing the practice old tests he gives you, helped me out a lot. I bought the textbook but didn't open it once. Overall this class is a lot of work but def do-able.
The professor is literally the GOAT. He is definitely one of the best professors I have had at UCLA, period. His exams are all online and open-notes, his problem sets are very well planned and always make sense out of the week's lectures. Everything he says and does just shows that the professor listens to feedback and thinks very carefully about making the class easy. The way he has explained the concepts of Econ 11, which is supposed to be one of the tougher Econ classes, is amazing. I never thought I will be good in a class where everything is math based, but, the professor has made the entire class so, so, so, easy that it is crazy. If you have the option of taking the class with this dude, you must otherwise you are missing out an amazing grade and also a very well taught course.
PS. he is super Italian and only gives Ferrari examples.
not sure how the grade scale of this works. the professor is cool. he provides formulaic examples in class and can be funny. However, his examples in class DOES NOT translate over to the exams. Half of the people in the class dedicated 40+ hours a week to study for the midterm, neglecting other areas of study to find out the midterm is nothing like the, "years of practice exams".
Pretty interesting lectures with good clarity. Flexible policy with exams so it doesn't weigh too heavily on one performance. Just put in the work and you will be fine, I got an A while taking a full course load and working 20 hours a week.
He told us all these funny stories in class which made lecture fun but whats the point of fun lectures when his tests are ridiculous and everyone struggles ?
I retook the class with Prof. Cantu Garcia in Spring and got an A.
Avoid at all costs !
ECON 11 Great Professor. Funny and keeps lecture interesting. However,he doesn't go over many examples in lecture so attend your section and practice all the problems. I got a B and if I studied a bit harder, an A is possible. Would take him again
Mazzocco is definitely my favorite professor in UCLA so far! His lectures are clear, organized, and interesting. If you pay attention in class, do the practice exams, and attend discussions, then you should do well on the midterms and final. I thought Econ 11 would be hell for me but it turned out to be great because of Mazzocco!
Definitely don't take mazzocco for econ 11, took him last year and learned nothing. he is very difficult to understand, which makes taking econ 101 very difficult given that you didn't understand econ 11! Cantu Garcia is a much better professor when it comes to clarity and learning. i got a C- in mazzocco's class then re-took econ 11 with Cantu Garcia and got an A-.
I really enjoyed taking microeconomics with Professor Mazzocco. He made lectures interesting, and went through them at a suitable pace. Don't be worried if you skip a lecture; he just goes over his powerpoints in lecture, which you can always print out online. However, all of the problems he shows you how to do in class will prove useful; they either appear on the problem sets or on his exams. His exams are not hard at all if you review the problem sets and old exams he posts.
Just make sure you don't get a horrible TA; I had Federico and that section really wasn't helpful at all. I would recommend Sophia or Ken as TA's.
