Not really sure how to start this review. Zeitlin was a great professor, he knows his stuff. (we even read some of his own material). He is not very approachable but no need because the material is not that hard. Of course, the reading is VERY DENSE. I NEVER really understood what i was reading, but discussion REALLY helped. O yes, DISCUSSION AND LECTURE are mandatory, so if you plan on missing , let your TAs know. Because if he calls on you in class and you dont answer, he will take 10 points off your final grade, that is a whole letter grade. this class is neccessary for the Soc major so it must be taken, I suggest taking i with Zeitlin. 1 Midterm 1 Final 2-3 "Study Problems" (aka HW) 2-3 In discussion Quizes 3-4 Readings per week Very straight forward. He explains what you need to know in class. STUDY MEMOS AND STUDY PROBLEMS WILL be on the test, so make sure to review and memorize them.. As for me, Midterm : 89% Final :Unsure yet. Quizzes: Pass Study Problems: Pass Take it with Zeitlin

Zeitlin definitely prepares a unique class. But I loved it. He calls on students in class and he really forces you to think. Make sure you do your readings because he will call you out. This is something which I really like. People were so scared to simply talk in class and I'm glad he forces people out of their shells. How can you function later in life if you can't voice what you've learned? Make sure to pay attention to processes, methods, and ideas he lays out in lecture and you will have the tools to handle the tests. You have to go to lecture, have to. Readings alone will not get you through this class if you're aiming to do well. Its all about analysis, method, and explanation. Explain you conclusions well and you will do great in this class.

I would highly recommend taking this course with Prof. Zeitlin. I don't know how anyone could say that his lectures are boring, because I find them riveting. Very seldom do I encounter a professor who presents material in such an engaging manner. The material that this course deals with is very disturbing, and it must be taken seriously. Of course it may be uncomfortable for someone who hasn't done the reading, but it is an Honors course, so people who take it should be willing to do the work and learn something. If you want to take an amazing course and change the way you think about events in the world, then take this course, but don't take it if you just want an easy A.

Professor Zeitlin can be intimidating at first, but he really cares about students learning the material and utilizing the facts to support your weekly posts. The course was really interesting, as I never knew the CIA/U.S. overthrew or got involved in so many countries post-World War II. It was something different, and Zeitlin's passion for it (the guy interviewed Fidel Castro in the '60s!) amps it up as well. As long as you do the work, he recognizes that and really respects you for it. Make sure you really know the readings so that you can answer his questions during class. He tends to speak for the majority of the class anyway, (he just knows so much), but you should always try to participate as well. While the readings are heavy, the assignments are not, as we only had a final essay due at the end of the quarter. All in all, it was a fun class since we all got along pretty well. Just don't be lazy and don't antagonize him. Know the facts and the timeline of everything that went on and you'll be fine. I don't know my grade in the class yet, so I can't really gauge how "easy" or "hard" it was, but work wise, it's not that bad, and the experience was interesting and sometimes fun.
