Taking Math 31B with Professor Wink was an amazing experience. I would agree on the part that he is one of the hardest professors for Math 31B, but he is one of the best ones as well.

Grading
He had two grading schemes and would use the one which yielded a better score for each individual student out of the two.

Scheme 1
Homework: 10%
Midterm 1: 20%
Midterm 2: 20%
Final exam: 50%

Scheme 2
Homework: 10%
Higher of midterm 1 or 2: 30%
Final exam: 60%

Homework
He assigned weekly problems from the exercises in the textbooks which had to be turned in during the lecture on Friday every week. The difficulty level of the problems ranged between easy, moderately difficult, and hard. Though they offered good practice, in order to perform well on his midterms and finals, just the homework problems definitely wouldn't suffice and extra practice of the examples and other problems from the exercises are important. In addition to that, I'd strongly advise to solve his practice midterms and final, and also the problem sheets assigned by the TA (if your TA does)- they're extremely helpful and a great source of practice. Also, he drops your two lowest homework scores and a score of 75% and above on the homeworks is considered as a 100%, so that even if you make some error, you can learn from it and avoid it later on without putting your grade at risk.

Midterms and Finals
His midterms and finals were hard- no kidding. The averages on the first and second midterms were a 50% and 61% respectively, and that on the final was a 63%. But that doesn't mean they were completely impossible to handle. The exams being hard just meant that he really made you work if you wanted to secure a good score. The one drawback with his midterms that I would say is that they were just worth 26 points. So if you made even a small error, that would drop your score in terms of percentages a lot. If you're consistent with practice and don't put off the syllabus for just before the midterms and final, then I don't think you'd have any major problems in performing decently on his tests. The material in Math 31B is much, and a lot of it is in interconnected with each other (for example, you can't move ahead with infinite series or Taylor polynomials without having your concepts of all the convergence and divergence tests crystal clear). That is why it is important that you follow through with the practice and material as it progresses in the class so that you allow yourself to get familiar with it at a comfortable pace, which is really crucial to ensure in this class if you wanna perform well.

Also, Professor Wink gave two points of extra credit for filling out the instructor evaluations at the end of the quarter.

Curve
He said that he wouldn't curve any exams (midterms or finals) individually, but would scale the overall scores after all the exams. The class was scaled down to quite an extent, with the cutoffs for letter grades in comparison to the overall scores being as follows-
100% or above: A+
>=85%: A
>=82%: A-
>=79%: B+
>=72%: B
>=69%: B-
>=64%: C+
>=53%: C
>=43%: C-
>=33%: D

In all, I'd definitely recommend someone who loves to learn more about the intricacies of Math to take Wink's class because although it is hard, you learn a lot and get used to taking difficult tests. He does a great job of preparing you well for harder classes to come along.

Had an okay experience with this class. Exams were tough - fast-paced and peppered with tricky questions. I mostly learned from the textbook; I definitely don't think I could've gotten by using just lecture material. Wink is helpful in office hours and scaled our homework so that it was easier to get full points on them even if you didn't get all the questions correct. He also gave two extra credit points at the end of the quarter for filling out his instructor evaluation.

Overall, not a bad choice for a prof, but you will have to put in a lot of your own work to do well.

His lectures are super proof-heavy and not very helpful. I ended up skipping lecture most of the time and studying from the textbook as his notes are straight from the textbook. Know the material inside out for the exams because there is just enough time to finish the exams and do all the practice questions he gives out. Overall, he is a nice guy and very receptive to questions but since it was his first quarter teaching at UCLA, he really did not know how to explain anything.

Wink was an okay professor. Exams were definitely tough, and required a lot of studying. For comparison, I found 31B with Wink a lot harder than 32A and studied close to 3x more for this class compared to the latter. Be prepared for theoretical, proof heavy lectures and a lot of self studying. Wink, however, is really good at office hours so if you utilize your resources wisely and do the extra problems (literally ever single one of them) on the problem sets he gives, the class should be okay as he tends to structure some midterm problems after the provided questions. This was something I only realized towards the end of the course, and definitely regret not doing.

On a side note, if you can get Timothy Smits as your TA for this class, definitely do. Transfer to his section if you can because he is absolutely amazing and I don't think I've ever had a TA as good as Timothy. He explains and simplifies concepts thoroughly and is probably one of the most patient and dedicated TAs at UCLA. I definitely would not have gotten through the class without his help so definitely try to sign up for his discussion if you can.

I avoided literally everything else in my life through all of winter quarter because: “I had a math test in two weeks.”

This is one of, if not THE, hardest class I’ve taken so far. My performance in 31A was already subpar and when that first midterm came, I ended up crying all the way to my dorm after the test, packing my bags, going back to an empty house for the weekend and just staring at the wall for three days. The average was 50 (my 60-sth was still disappointing) and I had to pick myself up and use every little resource available to finish the class with an okay grade. It is hard, he is not familiar with teaching it’s his first year in the states, and the lectures contain a ridiculous amount of material.
Bright side: he is a strangely charming person and makes the hell of a class a calming experience while he’s there. I don’t want to give his character a bad review, he’s great, but don’t take the class with him if you can (take it with conely, he doesn’t test or cover some of the super convoluted subjects wink does), but if you do, take the review sessions very seriously. If your TA talks about any weird little thing, chances are it’s gonna be on the test and it’s going to be hard.

I didn't really go to lectures because I found them to be extremely useless and boring. I learned most of the material through Youtube or the textbook but ended up not doing badly in class. I like his grading where he lets you drop one of the midterms because I slept through the second midterm and got a 0. Mostly I would take this class again anyways because I think there are worse professors out there. Also, he's extremely helpful during office hours for some reason, despite being all over the place in lectures. Bonus points because he is FINE. You get distracted during lectures because you can't take your eyes off of how HANDSOME he is.

Wink is still very new and learning how exactly to conduct class so this review may not be useful a few quarters from now. However I would say he’s a very average professor in his current state. Not anything great, but not bad. It’s not a hard class, but it’s not easy. The workload isn’t too bad, but it’s not super light either. The class was perfectly average.

Not gonna lie, this is a tough class. But I really like how Professor Wink presents the material; he shows a lot of "proofs", if you will, to show why theorems are true. This really helps for a deeper understanding of the material, and is great if you like math (Professor Wink is from Europe, where apparently math is taught from a more proof based perspective, whereas here it's more about computations-- you can take that how you will, but I really liked the different perspective). Sometimes lectures were difficult to understand, but he takes questions very well. And at office hours he's incredibly helpful. Very patient and thorough.
His lectures also follow the textbook quite closely, so if you're stuck from lecture it helps to review the book.
Do all the homework! Even the extra problems you don't have to turn in. Personally, I had do a lot more practice than what was even assigned. My advice is do as much practice as possible.
His tests are quite challenging, but honestly pretty fair. Took me a while to get used to his style of problems. My experience is that sometimes they're more doable than I thought they were. But sometimes you do get a really tough problem, which is life.
All in all, great math class.

Wink is a very nice guy who's receptive to questions in office hours and will repeat the material until you understand the topic (He's fantastic in office hours. Super clear and understandable). Lectures, however, were a whirlwind. I know some people that appreciated Wink's structure, but I quite frankly did not learn much from lectures because he would mostly do proofs. As such, I pretty much self studied the whole course through the textbook. Wink's exams admittedly are fairly hard and you have to do a lot of practice problems to do well in them . I honestly thought I was going to have to retake this class based on my midterm scores but revamped the way I studied for the final, and ended up doing okay especially given the fact that I had a D going into the final. Would take again. 7/10 experience.
