I took this in Fall 2020 online. By far one of the best classes I've ever taken at UCLA and one of the best professors to go with it. Lieberman is well liked by many, many students and if you take this class you'll see why.
Grading for this class is very simple: out of 100 points, 20 for going to 5 of 6 possible discussions and 40 each for the midterm and final. In previous classes students had to read 4 books and come prepared to discuss them in discussion; this quarter, Professor Lieberman reduced it to just 2 books (you can find them online) and make other discussions just partaking in fun activities. All you have to do is show up to get your points! In addition, the TAs provide a guide for anything you need to know from section that will be on the exams. Speaking of which, the midterm and final were both also relatively easy as long as you put in a little bit of studying and understanding the concepts.
Now for Professor Lieberman himself. Every one of his lectures was so genuine and fun. He often does entertaining examples and activities in class with students so you don't want to miss it; he recorded lectures for you to watch afterwards and did everything in his power to accommodate and make sure every student was learning, and he'd even record more lectures if he felt like he didn't explain something well enough. He is such a clear and helpful professor too that he held a grad school presentation and multiple open Q&As before exams to help students. He also provided 2 practice exams ahead of the actual exams that also helped a lot. This is the single BEST Column B psych class you can take and I urge ANYONE to take this class if interested in learning more about social psych and apply it to so many facets of their lives.
Professor Lieberman is a funny guy who oftentimes makes jokes in class. He creates a comfortable learning environment. His lectures are bruincasted and he doesn't take attendance which is nice to not have that stressor if you cannot make it to a lecture... but I would recommend going to them anyways in order to keep up with the class. His lectures were a bit confusing and I found myself having to re-teach myself some of the material before exams which was overwhelming but doable. The material is super interesting, so it was worth the extra work! If you attend lectures and make sure you are constantly understanding the material, then studying for the exams shouldn't be too difficult.
Definitely not an easy A. He talks fast in lecture so it's really helpful to rewatch it on Bruincast. To study, I typed everything he said and noted the significance of every study he mentioned. Go to office hours, either TA or professor, if you're confused about anything. Do the EC!
Great class, and I learned a lot of valuable lessons I will take on hopefully for a lifetime. Tbh I don't show up to a single lecture, I just watched the podcasts and took good notes and what he said (basically I wrote down anything that wasn't directly written on the slides). You have to go to discussion tho cuz it's worth 20% of your grade, and most of those points are for just showing up and participating. The assignments are super easy, you just write a few things you learned from the weekly reading.
The bulk of this class is going to be based on your exam score, so you have to be a decent test taker to do well in this class. The great thing about this class is there's no text, all the lecture material you need to know is going to be on the slides, and what he says in lecture of course. There are a couple questions on the readings, but there are study guides that come out so you know exactly what you're gonna be tested on for the discussions. I never actually read all of the required reading, I read some of it and then I would look at what the study guide said and read the material related to that, along w/ the discussion notes. Honestly, I felt like I sort of lucked out sometimes w/ the exams cuz there were some questions that were tricky and brought me to a 50/50. You have a good number of those "Not A, but B and C" type of choices, so you really have to know the lecture material to a deep level. If you wanna get an A in this class, I would give yourself at least several days before the exam to just absorb all the lecture material... do not think you can ace the exams studying the night before, cuz there are going to be some questions that make you think, and there are only like 44 questions so you can only get a couple wrong if you want an A. Also, you can get 1.5 points of extra credit by participating in SONA
I took this class online, Professor Lieberman is very clear and the lectures are interesting. The tests are all multiple choice and as long as you pay attention to the lectures the exams are easy to pass. This class is an easy A, interesting material, and Professor Lieberman is knowledgeable and passionate about social psych. There is no textbook but you have to read selected chapters from books. I got all the required books free online from libgen and honestly didn't read one of the books but still passed with an A because the TAs go over the chapters in class. You should definitely take this class but if you do, it's helpful to rewatch the lectures and attend discussions because it helps a lot for final exams.
I loved this class. I'm not gonna lie I did not attend lectures but I did watch all the recordings and took very detailed notes. The course consists of 40% midterm, 40% final, and 20% discussion (attend/participate). The exams questions are a lot of application and some memorization... so make sure to write down almost all of the experiments he discusses in class + basically everything from slides. The book material is a hit or miss, but the TAs typically provide you with what you need to know from the book for each exam (also get them on libgen). Lectures for this class were super engaging and I was never bored when I watched it. Overall, super fair class and doable for an A. Not an EZ A, so make sure you actually understand the concepts fairly well (hint: do the practice exams).
Please take this guy!!! He's one of the best here. Engaging interesting lecture. Watching his lecture is like watching a TV show--you can sit and relax and have some snacks. Very easy tests. I got all correct for both exams. He also offers 3 extra credits on Sona, which is a lot. The TA Lucas is super interesting and helpful. Even though 4 books are required, you don't need to read at all because the TA would summarize everything you need to know on their slides. Very easy and interesting class.
Prof L is super awesome and friendly and patient. The class is very interesting. He makes up some of his own terms but overall he's pretty clear and straightforward. Selling the books (there are a few paperbacks) **********
If you're going to take Psych 135, don't bother taking anyone other than Prof. Lieberman!! He really made this class such a good experience even during a global pandemic. Not only is he super funny and engaging, he is actually a way more accomplished and prestigious professor than I realized when I signed up for his class. You know that social psychology Cyberball study, where they had subjects play the virtual game where you're passing a ball between two people, and then the two people just end up passing to each other and ignoring you so you feel socially rejected? He literally ran that study. He literally was one of the first people to start the field of social neuroscience. In terms of class stuff, the exams are super easy and generally everyone does really well. I didn't do the readings and still got an A-, but I honestly wish I did because I feel like there's just a lot of valuable life information in the books he assigns. I definitely learned a lot from this class and I would take it again. It was so interesting. This class also helped me to understand why Trump people are as dumb as they are. I didn't participate at all and I still got an A-, so that was worth it to me. Just ace the exams and that's all you need to do to secure at least an A-.
I had no interest in Social Psychology but this class was really fun. The readings could be extensive (2 books - it was 4 but the TAs made it 2) but they aren't that useful so you'll be fine without reading them. The majority of your grade are the two tests (80%) and basically, every question on the test is worth 1% of your grade. I barely got an A with a 93.5% and that is thanks to the extra credit. It is a fun class but you gotta study hard for those two tests.
