this professor is horrible. she has no concern for your grade whatsoever. her lectures are extremely long and boring. the essays, which are due the same that they are given, have the worst and unfair grading ever (all subjective). please please please, do NOT take this professor. if you actually want to learn something useful out of this class, please avoid her in every single way possible!!!
If I could go back and drop this class and wait another quarter to take it with someone better... and actually learn something and appreciate these theorists, then I would. Sadly I can't, and honestly if you are taking this class "just to get it over with," you're better off at waiting another quarter where she ISN'T teaching it. Dry, lectures are all over the place, unapproachable, and assignments were definitely not serving the needs of the students she instructs.
I was one of those that thought after reading BruinWalk, "she can't be that bad." Boy was I wrong!
she is exactly what the rating show her to be, not good, not effective, very boring and not availiable -- she gives you a tke home midterm-- due same day-- i dropped her class -- her grading is unfair, shes brutal and doesnt bring any light to 101-- its an intro CLASS not a grad level class! I dropped her class-- i have professor Jepson now and i'm actully learning!!!
Gosh was this the worst class I ever took at UCLA. Professor Hart is extremely boring, and it didn't help that class was early in the morning. Her lectures are very dry, and although the material is essential to a strong foundation in Sociology, I absolutely regret taking her class. Her assignments included three 2250 word essays that were assigned and due the same day. Even after reading the dense material, I only got a C out of the class. The TAs provided little assistance, and simply regurgitated what she tried to explain during lectures. Seriously, as if the class material wasn't dry enough, she has to come in and make the whole class fall asleep with her style of lecturing. I absolutely do not reccomend taking her for a large class such as SOC101. She may be different in a seminar, but in a 120 person classroom, she will bore you to sleep.
She is absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had. The lectures are boring and snooze-fest and she assigns essays that have to be 2500 words and only gives you a day to do it. I promise you that if you take her you will regret it and realize how bad she is.
I actually really enjoyed Prof. Hart's class. She is very knowledgeable, has well-prepared lectures, and provides a lot of background information to the readings. The reading was surprisingly light, although dense, and the themes were really interesting. The things going on in the U.S. economy paralleled some of the concepts we discussed, so it was cool to look at the parallels. I don't understand why people expect professors to be entertainers.. she lectures, lets you ask questions and discuss, and shows some Powerpoint slides.. which is more than some professors bother to do. The subject is inherently dry if you're not interested in sociology.. in which case I suggest you open your mind and take advantage of the amazing opportunity you have at UCLA to learn from really accomplished people and be introduced to new ideas. We only had 3 short papers(2500 words max) throughout the quarter and no final exam.
If you're looking for a great introduction to capitalism sociological theory with a knowledgeable professor, this class is it.
