Professor Tassy gives clear lectures and provides plenty of examples to make sure we understand the theory. The weekly quizzes aren't really anything to stress about because they come straight from the homework. We had one midterm and it was pretty easy (median was a 37/50). The final was tougher with a 58/90 median. I got an A with a 45/50, 72/90 and mostly hundreds on HW grades. He gives plenty of resources to study from, and although I never attended office hours I heard he is very helpful. It really isn't a hard class as long as you make sure to understand the HW problems, which will take some time.
Tassy is has a French accent so sometimes when he talks it is a bit unclear and he tends to rush through material without giving sufficient explanation for the students to do the problems. Probability is a lot more difficult that students expect and should be studied seriously and carefully. Tassy's exams are fair although the homework that he assigns can be pretty difficult and challenging. You can expect to spend many hours doing the homework, so it's best you start working in teams with some friends in class otherwise you may never complete them in time when you get stuck on a question. One good thing is that he only has 1 midterm, so that's really good for those of you who are taking multiple classes because you have less exams to take. Overall, he's not a bad professor!
I took the class in Fall 2015.
Professor Tassy is a good instructor overall. Though he has a little bit accent, he is still able to deliver clear lectures and answer questions. He is helpful in his office hours and willing to explain HW problems.
HWs were very difficult, and they took me hours to complete. The textbook did not help a lot since its information is too general and there are very few basic questions to practice. Though I understood the formula and how to use them, I felt frustrated when I could not interpret the conditions in a given context and transform them into the formula I’ve learned.
The first midterm was super easy with an average of 45/50. The second one was a lot harder, and most of students did not finish the exam. The final was more computational than conceptual. He tested many tricks that he mentioned.
Overall it’s fair enough. It could be better with further improvement.
I don't recommend this class.
The tests are difficult, and it's hard to get an A. I felt like I understood everything in class and most of the homework, but then completely struggled with the harder homework questions and tests. The weekly homework is also pretty hard; solutions to the textbook problems are online, and almost all his weekly quizzes are the problems he writes himself. He's very helpful during office hours.
I took his class this fall and he's very fair in terms of the difficulty of midterms and finals (Very comprehensive and not out of the blue). Study his notes and do the homework and really don't stress out too much about this class.
I think his curve is very generous in terms of getting B's I didn't perform well on the final and THE MIDTERMS and only did somewhat well on the hw and I got a B-. However, I do believe from listening to others getting in the A range is very tough. You must be meticulous with every point. Maybe this is true for all upper division math classes?
The professor cares about your learning a lot. In office hours, he doesn't mind answering any question you have and he tries to elaborate to teach you what you need to know. His notes are also very thought out and he doesn't go too quickly at all in comparison to some other professors. I recommend him a lot! (Just be careful if you're trying to get an A)
