My favorite professor from the cluster!! Her lectures were always super engaging, included interesting information that was often funny too, and her quiz questions were usually simple to answer. Take notes if it's helpful, but her slides are usually really good so I just used them to make a quizlet to study for the quizzes.
Class: You take three quizzes that cover material from each professor that taught within those three weeks (ex. quiz 1 = weeks 1-3) that are 16 questions. The best 2/3 scores are used for your final grade. The rest of your grade comes from participation during your discussion section (nothing crazy happens here, we almost always left early and was pretty chill) and two papers you write. The topics are related to what you learned in class and usually you have to relate that to other species, humans, and your personal life and these are graded by your TA out of 100, so it depends on how tough your TA is with grading.
To be honest, I don't like this class. Professor Haselton and Professor Scelza's lectures were my favorite but I was super confused by pretty much everything Professor Gallagher and Professor Schlinger said. I liked Professor Stroessner and could tell he tried to keep things organized but with so many professors and different subjects, I think that is hard. The lectures didn't connect and it was always hard to tell what would be on the quizzes. My TA never communicated what was expected of us, specifically on the papers, but I heard other TAs were great so it really depends. If it weren't for the TA strike, I wouldn't have an A so next quarter will be hard for me if I end up with the same TA. I don't recommend unless you are super passionate about the subjects.
Kind of an incoherent class because the professors are all lecturing on such different topics and really vary in how interesting their lectures are. That being said, the cluster knocks out lots of GEs ... I guess. I don't know, I wish I'd picked better GEs that were actually interesting and more specialized.
Martie was great and her lectures were engaging and fun. I took the entirety of this cluster (including the seminar at the end), and I definitely don't regret it. I feel like I learned a great amount, and the class won't hurt your GPA as long as you put good effort into the essays and do the readings. If you show up to lecture and read the required texts you'll have no problem bopping out the essays and you'll be super prepared for the final.
The learning experience in this class was also super TA dependent. I had Saanchi Shah and Jennifer Joines -- both were great. I liked Jennifer so much that I took her seminar in the spring which was super cool with reading material that I legitimately enjoyed wholeheartedly. If you can get Jennifer as your TA, do it.
