He was a really good professor. I enjoyed his lectures. His study guide for the midterm and final are really thorough and practically everything he says during lecture so if you did miss a class or did not do the reading, it's covered with the study guide. But it's better to do the reading and go to lecture since more of his test questions are not so much definitional but require you to use what you know (such as definitions of terms) and be able to apply it! A bit challenging, but great professor!
Jepson is a real cool dude. The class wasn't an easy A or anything but it is defintiely feasible. I am an athlete so I was gone half of the time traveling, and Jepson was real chill about it. There was a midterm and a final, both multiple choice, with a fat curve because everyone did bad. But he knew he made the test too hard so he adjusted on the final and made it easier. I ended up with a B in the class and I didn't try that hard at all. My TA was bad though and he graded all my articles really hard, but Jepson was cool. I am now enrolled in 2 more classes with Jepson because he's so down to earth and such a nice guy. Take Jepson as a teacher but watch out for dumb TAs.
Jepson is a champ. He knows his stuff and he's very interesting.
The post below me is very inaccurate though.. He doesn't use lecture slides or podcasts, but he does post a comprehensive study guide for his exams.. and it's very very comprehensive. Also, he doesn't test on anything outside the book.
I wouldn't say the tests are easy (class average on the first one was mid-60s), but getting an A seems to be very easy since it's curved.
He doesn't exactly pick the best TAs, so I wouldn't recommend getting stuck with a harsh grader.
As far as the article reading, I doubt anyone read all the articles.. they're very dense research journal articles 30+ pages.. I didn't read a single page after week 1 and got away with it in discussion..
I loved having Jepson as my professor! His class was the first 8am class I have ever taken at UCLA, and I was worried about it because I am definitely not a morning person. At first, I was really discouraged because I found out Jepson does not use lecture slides or post anything online, so the only way to get lecture material is by going and actually paying attention (not just sleeping). However, I found that it wasn't hard to pay attention to Prof. Jepson. His lectures are always interesting, and he makes jokes to keep your attention. He also repeats statements that he thinks are important a few times, which is really helpful so that you don't miss his important points and have time to write them down. The tests were very easy (all multiple choice), and your overall grade is curved. The only downside to this class were that the readings were long and boring (the textbook was alright, but the articles were looooong)... but the articles really aren't that important. There are only a few questions on the tests about the articles, so I got away with not reading a few of them. I liked this class, even though the material was boring (research methods). By the end of the quarter, only about 20 of us would show up to his early morning lectures, but he still acted like he was lecturing to a full audience and wasn't discouraged by the fact that so few of us would come. I hope I can take Jepson again!
