Actual course: Soc 1. No idea why it wasn't on my list.

I took this class in the fall of 2011. Jepson, although a hired lecturer, outshines most of the “real” professors I have had so far. He knows what he's talking about and his lecturers never fail to be interesting. He has a lot of opinions and isn’t afraid to share them, and he is also really, really funny. It got to the point that I would copy his jokes into the margin of my notes so that I’d have something to smile over while studying for the midterm/final. Also, he does ask questions in lecture and genuinely seems to like hearing student opinions, which is nice even though I’m not the type to speak up in a lecture.

Discussion sections are divided up into smaller groups of 4, and you basically just discuss the reading. My TA, Karra Greenberg, was fabulous, although a hard (but fair) grader. I didn’t hear great things about the other TAs, so I would definitely recommend her.

The course reader rang up to a whopping $92 and unfortunately I haven’t yet been able to resell mine. But you definitely need a copy as that is the only textbook for the course. Homework consists of three readings per week: one article for each lecture and one for the discussion section. Compared to my other social science classes, it’s hardly anything. I also know quite a few people in my discussion section never bothered to do the reading and still do okay on the tests, mainly because Jepson does a fabulous job of working through each reading and distilling the points of the articles.

Grading was based on 5 short (one page) essays, 1 midterm, and 1 final. I thought both exams were very fair, and I ended up with an A+ in the class. My only complaint would be the 8 am start time.
