Thought this was a fine class, more interesting than some other soc classes. If you attend class, listen, and read the readings you will be fine.

I took this class for the first quarter of my freshman year and it was extremely worth it. I took it as a prerequisite for my major and I highly recommend for everyone. Unfortunately it was an 8 am but the course work isn't too crazy so I did end up skipping a couple lectures with no negative consequences.

I think the most important parts are the readings that he assigns (read all of them!!!!) and the discussion questions. During the discussion we discussed the readings that the professor assigned and answered the questions that the TA provided. Those questions ended up being on both the midterm and the final! So try to keep notes/the worksheet from discussion.

There are short abstracts, current events, and one sociological imagination paper. Depending on your TA and how they score it, you could struggle. But I got great scores on most of my papers. The best thing was that these papers are all usually 1 or 2 pages double spaced. So the workload is perfectly manageable!

This class is a 2 hour lecture at 8 am which makes it really tough, but Professor Jepson is a super entertaining dude and makes a lot of jokes. However, I still found myself falling asleep in his class a lot, but it's because I'm not really a morning person, not because he's boring lecturer. There's about 3 readings a week in the class which really aren't too bad. On average they're like 13 pages. I think there's 2 40 page readings which really suck, but for the most part all of the readings are super interesting and applicable. In lectures he just goes over the readings from the week and he occasionally plays movies which the midterm and final have questions about. The tests aren't too bad. He provides a study guide for both of them, but they are a little tricky. There's only 5 one page papers that you have to write which your TA's grade, but in the end he creates separate grading scales for each TA so even if you feel that you have a super difficult grader for a TA, like I did, he'll adjust your grade in the end. I definitely recommend this class. He's super entertaining and it's and interesting class for sure.

Y'all have to take sociology 1 with Jepson! He is a great professor! His lectures were extremely engaging and I learned a lot about society. The topics he covers are all interesting because it gives you more insight into things you already know about society. The readings are interesting but some are 20+. You have to read all the readings assigned in order to understand his lectures and in order to pass the midterm and final! He focuses on specific things for the exams so do the readings! Overall, I do recommend taking jepson!

Professor Jepson is by far one of my favorite professors at ucla! All of his lectures are engaging...and that's important considering all his classes are usually taught at 8 AM! He is very funny at times and will be "real" with the class as much as possible. His introductory sociology course interested me so much I switched majors right away. Take any class of Jepson's and you won't regret it!

I found Jepson's lectures to be relevant, engaging, and often funny. The workload is light - he assigns 5 one-page double-spaced papers throughout the course that are submitted and graded by TA's. Other than that, there is no homework. There is one midterm and one final that is not cumulative. Both exams are structured as 50 multiple choice questions and 2 short essay questions. It was not hard to earn an A in this class, and I enjoyed going to class to hear Jepson's lectures. Would definitely recommend.

Basically, to get an A in this class, you have to do all the readings. He didn't really take attendance, so I missed a few lectures(because it's an 8am), but in the lectures, he goes over the readings that are due each week, so I suggest you go if you didn't understand the reading. Every week, you have 2-3 readings due, and although some are boring in the beginning, the contents get really interesting. I loved his lectures. He's really engaging and funny. Even though it had a lot of reading, I think the class is very fun and worthwhile! If you're into soc, take it

Jepson's a good guy. Good lectures, no slides or anything, just him standing behind a podium talking for 2 hours.

Lectures are pretty hard to sit through at 8AM but Prof. Jensen is a funny guy so lectures are fairly interesting if you can stay awake and pay attention. Do not underestimate this class or take it as an easy GE because it is a decent amount of work and it's hard to score well on exams / papers. My TA always wrote "Great!" but would give me an 80% so I never got any better/ knew what to change to do better in the future. Overall very interesting class, though.

This class is really engaging and eye-opening. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone looking for an interesting yet manageable GE to take because the content of the class is definitely thought-provoking. If you are interested in income inequality, race divisions, gender, structures of government, and more, this is a class for you. Yes the teacher doesn't use slides, but he does post notes on CCLE and speaks at a nice slow pace. He's also really approachable and funny. The workload is also completely manageable - 3 moderately long (average about 15 pages) articles to read a week. Not going to lie, the final and midterm are pretty hard and you won't do well if you don't read the articles closely. However, they both follow the same format (50 MC and 2 free response from 6 topics). If you basically memorize your answers to the study guides you will be fine.
