Professor Huppin is an amazing professor! During lectures, you can tell that he really enjoys teaching the material and cares for his students. There were three thought papers, which were only 2 pages long. I thought they were pretty easy, seeing that you had to make an argument on a court case he assigned for that paper. There's only one timed midterm. He posted the midterm in the beginning of class and we had to turn it in before class ended. I thought the midterm was fairly easy if you had good notes on lecture and read the court case articles. The midterm consisted of a multiple choices and short answer questions. The final was similar to the midterm, but with more short answers. He assigns multiple of readings and supplemental reading for the court cases each week. If you attend lecture, read the articles, and study the powerpoints you should be fine.
[spring 2020 covid online quarter] Once Huppin subbed for one of my classes in Winter quarter I knew I had to take him. He was fantastic but I'll wager he would have been better in person. His teaching style revolves around asking students to discuss and critically think about the cases and legal debate issues he brings up in class. The same 10 students out of 100 ended up being the only ones talking week to week (you bet I was in the 90). He places an emphasis on showing up to class and engaging yourself (he only sent class recordings to students in other timezones/good reason for missing, he didn't post it for your general review/replay). If you don't listen and take notes, you will miss things, and his slides purposely only guide his lecture and cannot be relied on to help you study. That being said, idk if was because of that, or because of his engaging, very human and sensitive approach to the new circumstances of this quarter, % class attendance was really high every time. He also adjusted the class to talk about current events with COVID and BLM and stuff, very take it as you go guy.
There was a good amount of reading, which I didn't do very sincerely, but if you do scan over it, it lines up with the lectures pretty well and will help you do well on the tests. (Ah, I remember he said he usually assigns a course reader which I assume would be $$ but this quarter he uploaded everything online so I escaped paying for that ig, nice.) He also assigned 2 movies which were a good time, 8/10 (also gave us off class on the days we should watch those on our own, I think he usually shows them in class).
Grade was based on two tests. The questions to be honest weren't very straight-proceeding from the class material and really wanted to see whether you were thinking, which I think should be the point of school, but made it hard to figure out what to say in order to get the points.
In all, definitely take this class, but know that Huppin's teaching style almost certainly suits in-person the best.
Super chill class. It was a mixture of lecture and guest speakers on topics that were being discusses. His lectures can be a little long and kind of intense, as he gives you a lot of information on studies and research being done. Take really good notes even when the speakers come. He tends to pull a lot of specific details for tests. We took our exams online so it was helpful to have notes, but the time limit is pretty strict. With that being said, the class is mostly exam based, with the midterm and final being 40% each and then 2 short papers worth 10% each. The papers are pretty easy and graded leniently so they help cushion your grade. Study hard for tests and take super detailed notes and you'll be good.
Favorite class I've taken at UCLA. Enrolled in my first Waitlisted class at the chance of having this professor again. Do the readings and understand the material, and you will do well. Content is applicable and engaging. Class participation is helpful, but I know that is not everyone's cup of tea.
I liked this course and would recommend it. Huppin was very funny and the lecture content was very interesting to me. He uploads the audio version of the lecture but his voice is often very monotone so it's not very engaging, to be honest, it's best to just go. I thought the tests were very reasonable and easy to digest, just make sure you do the readings! He adds minor details that can easily cost you a couple of points. Overall, good class.
Best professor at ucla. A midterm, an easy easy paper designed to boost the grade, and a final. I have the course reader for this class, brand new untouched. for half of what i bought it for. $25 **********
Loved this class! But the final was a lot harder than the midterm, as he uses a few questions from the course reader, and if you have not read that then you might lose a few points. Attending every class is crucial in order to understand what each case constitutes of, but of course they could also be read over online. He is a great professor who is very engaging and truly cares about his students and their understanding of the class. 2 papers that are a bit hard to get full credit on-probably the grading fault of the TA's, but if you answer everything from the prompt and add some of your own analysis, you should be fine. Also selling the course reader **********
Class breakdown below:
Exam 1- 40%
Exam 2- 40%
1 thought paper- 20% (usually there are two worth 10% each)
I found Huppin's lectures to be engaging and interesting. I really enjoyed the material as I felt it to be relevant information. The reading material is manageable; there are a few articles/ cases to read prior to lectures. I read all of the readings for the exams and did well. The exams are fair and straightforward. You should be fine if you put in the time to study and read the material. He offers office hours after class and also meets with students via appointment. He isn't great at communicating and doesn't answer his emails. When students had positive cases of COVID and couldn't take exams, he had difficulty getting back to them. Other than poor communication, I would recommend Huppin and this course.
There is a lot to say about this class - it's extremely interesting, for one. The material is very engaging and you will learn some very valuable things, even if you are not interested in law. However, it is very challenging, so be prepared for that. You have to put in a lot of work to succeed on the exams. Huppin is also pretty terrible at communication. He never responds to emails, even if they are students notifying him of positive covid results right before exams, and he also never got back to them after the fact. His lectures are not very structured either, so I sometimes found it difficult to follow everything he was saying until after I Googled it later. My best advice is to read all of the case briefs in full before taking exams, they are extremely useful. Definitely do all of the readings for this class.
