In Fall 2023, this class was titled "Democracy, Freedom, Truth, and Sustainable Futures: Diverse Global Perspectives". This was such a chill class! In essence, the lessons were us getting together for an hour to discuss global issues and our thoughts on them. There was a deliverable in the last week which could be anything - a report, infographic, art piece, music composition, etc. - and on any topic related to the theme. Dr Orellana provided such a safe space for discussion and helped us focus on fostering an environment of unity, understanding and appreciation for global perspectives.
Awesome professor! The class itself is a lot of work (a lot of papers and field notes!) but its fun. We get to go to a school site once a week and interact with the kids there. Then write a 5 page summary of your interactions (seems like a lot but its doable). Final paper is a group paper and that is pretty much your grade. except, they dont believe in grades! As long as you do all your work, you got an A (plus its 7-8 units cuz you gotta take it with 182/183).
This class is not your typical class. It is not a class where you are expected to only read, memorize, and listen to lectures. You have to be able to apply what you learned in class in real life situations. Make connections with the different theories and analyze them. If you like an engaging and dynamic class, this is for you.
I enjoyed this class.
I took this class Fall Quarter of 2013. Easy A, Orellana is more concerned with the students understanding of the material opposed to focusing on harsh grading. This class is taken with a field visit. So field notes will be required. They can be time consuming so give yourself an hour at least to do them.
