Professor Margot was a great professor, although sometimes her explanations were confusing at times. This class was pretty challenging for me, not gonna lie. The structure of the class is clicker quizzes, clicker participation points, homework, 2 midterm and a final.

The way the class is set up is that at the beginning of class, Margot will have a clicker quiz. There are 20 total quizzes, but you only need to get the answer correct for 10 of them to get full points on quizzes. Throughout her presentation, there will be various clicker participation opportunities. In addition, participation is accounted from attending discussion, in which you need to sign in. Discussions basically go over a couple of problems that are assigned on the homework. If you do well on the quizzes, homework and get all participation points, then you have enough points which equate to one midterm.

Margot structures the class in which she goes off a straight scale. She will not curve the class, but she may bring the scale down, so there is an opportunity for many people to get A's. I ended up with an A in the course, but to be honest, I was surprised. I did very poorly on both midterms. I got D's on both midterms and for both midterms, I was below the average. The first midterm I was about 10 points below the average and for the second midterm, I was 4-5 points below the average. Even before taking the final, I calculated that I needed to get a B on the final just to get a C+ in the class. But I guess I did pretty well on the final and also Margot may have shifted the grading scale down, so I was able to get an A in the course. So I hope my case gives hope to some people and just study hard for each midterm so that you wont have to study extra hard on the final to pass the class. You can do it!

Margot is just super clear about everything. If you look back at all the material she taught about in lecture, you could see how structured her stuff is. Weekly problem sets help a lot and the TAs are super helpful as well. Margot also brought in real life discoveries and actual papers to apply the theory to let us see the big picture. Great experience overall and I really learned a lot from this class.

I really liked Professor Quinlan! She is very concerned about student learning and she is very straightforward. She is also super approachable and takes steps to make sure students are given what they need to succeed. For example, she asks you to put your questions on CCLE forums for the other students to see. But she also allows you to email her your questions and she will post them anonymously if you are self-conscious about your question.
She gives you a template for her lectures before lecture. She writes on them during lecture and then uploads those notes after class. I personally prefer this to podcasting, because she writes down all the important things in the notes. She also pauses to write things down so you aren't scribbling your notes during lecture.
The tests are extremely fair; our class averages were pretty high for the midterms. You also get a cheat sheet.
My only complaint about this class is that the tablet she uses doesn't work too well for handwriting notes. They can get illegible at times, but you can just ask her for clarification,
Quinlan is a great professor and I wish she taught more courses because I would definitely take them with her.
