The professor is great, but the TAs are another story. They are not easy graders and the grade distribution for the class was not clear. The TA told us that grades would be boosted, but they ended up being calculated from our raw score. It was impossible to even argue since they don’t post their grade distribution anywhere. Overall, I would say beware of your TA and don’t expect an easy A like the previous reviews explained.
Straightforward material and Hunter keeps lecture engaging. Make sure you do the readings because that is how you will build your argument for your midterm/final papers. I'm not sure if this was the case with all TAs, but mine was very focused on essay structure so I recommend making topic sentences, transitions, thesis, etc. clear.
Hunter offers plenty of extra credit to help boost your grade. Take advantage of it because the grading structure is different than other classes I've had. Go to section because attendance was taken regularly and makes up a good portion of your grade.
I feel like the previous responder had the same TA as me lol. I agree it is very TA dependent. But the good thing is that she is graduating and is no longer going to hand out potato grades. There is 1 3+ page essay for the midterm and 2 4+ essays for the final and a multimedia project you do in a group. If you wanted an easy A, I'm not sure if this class hands 85% A's anymore, so you should be prepared to do more work than you'd thought.
Professor Hunter is amazing and the class is very fun but Please be Aware of your TA as they control your grades. You don't have to believe me as the reviews make this class seem like the easiest class ever for an A but it really does depend on the TA. Grades are dependent on two essays (about 6-8 pages) for the midterm and final and a video project that you do with your fellow classmates. However, I still highly recommend this class as Professor Hunter is genuinely an amazing person and professor and the workload is very small. Just, in my recommendation, please allow your schedule to be somewhat flexible so you can change TAs if you find one to be absolute dogshit. And yes I am salty lol. #ripmy3.7
Professor Hunter is so amazing. He is so passionate about his teachings. What I loved most about his class is that he incorporated a lot of art and music which was super fun and engaging. I would totally recommend this class to anyone. Easy GE and a great time.
If interested I'm selling his book " Black Citymakers:How The Philadelphia Negro Changed Urban America" for $10. Great book. Helped A LOT during midterm and final exam. My email is *************.
This professor, overall is funny, passionate, and really into what he's teaching but because he's these things it means he's a fast talker and will often go through slides really fast. Most of the information on the slides are important dates and events but what he is saying is a lot more important.
He does not give sit-down tests, rather he gives take-home essays as the midterm and final, BUT BEWARE.
The main things for these tests is that you should definitely READ ALL THE READINGS to know which to choose for your arguments.
The essay prompts are really broad and require you to use two or more of the readings referred to in class, beyond that its all you.
For the grading of the tests the TAs are told to take away more points for grammar than for content.
