I took Math 3C with March in the Winter 2020. In a nutshell, March is an approachable instructor, but he’s simply not good at teaching this class. I found his teaching style to be dull, and outright boring at times. He often struggles to explain concepts or answer students’ questions. Now, this might be due to language barrier or it could be because March is a supposed “math genius” (he’s only 21 years old). The unfortunate thing is this cruel genius can’t teach. In fact, I learned more from my TA, Ben, than I did from March. Ben was an amazing TA and I was lucky to be in his section. The emergence and spread of the COVID-19 virus only contributed to my dissatisfaction in this course and in March as an instructor.
In response to Covid-19, March made our Final exam a take-home final. This is understandable -- in fact, many instructors opted for this. What March also decided to do was that on Saturday (less than a week from the time of the final and a few hours after UCLA instructor evaluations closed) he changed the course’s grading scheme by reducing the weight of the final. Originally, the scheme was 10% Homework, 20% Quizzes, 20% First midterm, 20% Second midterm, and 30% Final. He notified us by email that he would be increasing the weight of the midterms(that we had already taken) from 20% to 30% for each one and lowering the weight of the final from 30% to 10%. Effectively, this made it such that there was little to no room to improve one’s grade, and caught everyone by surprise. Obviously, such a last minute alteration to the grading scheme and syllabus upset a lot of students but apparently UCLA gave professors the ability to do this in response to coronavirus- although I find it reprehensible the manner in which apathetic March went about this. Most professors opted to make things easier on students during this time, but not March. This whole fiasco with the multiple changes to the final really put a lot of stress on students during finals week and left a really bad taste in my mouth.

The only graded assignments are quizzes (5 weighted at 5% each), two midterms (22.5% each), and the final (30%), which makes it difficult to track your progress versus March's expectations. I say versus March's expectations since that is how your work will be graded: this professor is only ready for one method of proof on any exam and will give you a 0 if you don't use that method exactly, or if it is "too hard" for him to read. On the plus side, he tells you exactly which method of proof to use: look at the answers to the homework and exercises and try to interpolate which exam question corresponds to which homework problem and then proceed from there (oh the benefits of open book tests). Overall 131B isn't that heavy of a workload with March, but whatever level of work and understanding you put into the course is unlikely to be reflected in your grades. Oh, and March isn't rigorous or clear in lecture, but expects you to be on exams. I would suggest you take this course from another professor, and good luck!

I feel that I learned what I was supposed to without going into that much more detail than was needed. March is pretty dry but gets to the point. Would take again

March is such an interesting man. Definitely has a unique personality but I loved it. He's straightforward and his tests are more than fair. VERY easy class if you just follow his lectures and he posts summaries of his lectures after class as well. Also, choose Ben Jarmen/Jamen? sorry I forgot how to spell my TA's name lmfao but he was the best TA and literally gave identical practice problems as the tests. 10/10 recommend this professor and TA for this course :)

March is a very straightforward professor. His homework was ungraded with answers provided. His tests are very similar to the homework. He always says what will be on the test and sometimes writes practice questions. This makes him a pretty easy and stress-free professor. He does not try to trick students.

At the same time, he would often gloss over what things were conceptually. He would often write things off as just some concept in physics and not give a very good answer to what things actually were. He also only scrolls through a pdf as his means of lecturing.

Overall, would take class again, especially since I had a large workload from other classes this quarter, but definitely would have liked more visualizations and better descriptions of what things were conceptually. Also, not sure if he will continue to be so easy in the future as the averages for tests were often close to 100% and I'm unsure if the department is fine with that.

March is an ICON. once you take this class you will know what I mean. Sometimes in class he'll spout a bunch of equations and random steps on the board without really explaining what he's doing, and you'll feel overwhelmed, but trust me you will figure it out either on your own or the TA will explain it to you (try to get Ben Jarman as a ta, he's amazing). The tests are exactly what you would expect based on the homework he assigns. Just stay on top of your homework and you'll be fine. I was scared bc I wasn't good at probability during high school pre-calc, but somehow I was able to figure it out, so you will too. overall highly recommend this class.

Best math professor ever! He's extremely easy and fair, although he's not the best if you want to get a deep understanding of the concepts. The averages on exams and quizzes were near 100% every time, as this was his first quarter teaching. There's optional homework, which is definitely worthwhile to do because the exams and quizzes are pulled directly from the homework with different numbers. He never turned his camera on, but he was a funny and helpful professor. Definitely take March!

Honestly, his class is very straightforward, he is just difficult to understand. He doesnt really explain concepts, he just does examples and expects you to understand the method he is using. I got through this class bc of the amazing TA i had (Ben, take his section). He explains everything so well and goes over the quiz material right before we took each one. His quizzes were fine, homework was helpful, but his exams were made to be tricky.

Professor March has got down Multi-Variable Calculus to a science. His lectures are so thorough and comprehensive on the types of questions asked during tests, that I never even had to pick up the textbook all quarter. While his teaching style takes some getting used to, (simply talking over slides instead of working out problems with students) his slides cover everything needed for tests which. Homework is optional so your entire grade is built off of quizzes and tests, but I highly recommend doing the homework since it's basically the tests! Overall, I would highly recommend taking Math 32B with the math prodigy himself.
