oh my gosh, the group projects were a mess I honestly got unlucky with my group I'm sure some people had better experiences but overall the class was not hard. I just had to work with other people who don't respect your time.

This class WOULD NOT END. Momdjian is just not a clear or engaging lecturer in the slightest and each week seems to be just a random topic she decides to speak on. The readings are too long & too dense and she never actually goes over them so you never feel like you get clarification on anything. The grading & assignments are not hard at all and you will get an A if you put in the effort but I would not take this again.

Professor Momdijan is very knowledgeable about this niche in Ottoman history, and many of the readings are interesting. The main issue with this class is our final, a group project composed of 10 people. As you can imagine, it was really difficult to coordinate a cohesive project with this many students. I found it super frustrating, made even harder by the fact that we had no prompt whatsoever to guide the project. All the presentations occurred during week 10, and during both class periods she made us stay after the end of our designated class period to listen to all the presentations. The first time, students were obliged to stay after for about 25 mins, but the second time, students were asked to stay for over an hour. This is because she didn't correctly account for how many class period she would need to hear all the 20 min presentations. I found this really disrespectful of students' time, especially given that she herself has a penchant for being regularly late to class. Overall, the group project was a total headache and I don't recommend this class.

This class was broken down into two quizzes (5% each), attendance and participation (15%), midterm (20%), Papers (25% but you write 3), and a take home final (30%). Her lectures were interesting and easy to follow along. The papers were only 3-4 pages with the final being a 4-6 page paper. She gave enough information in class and the assigned readings posted on ccle that the papers were quite simple to write. She's a generous grader. I would take a class with her again and I would recommend a class with her. Her accent can be difficult to understand on some words if you don't know or aren't familiar with Arabic so it's better to sit in the front. She posts all her slides on ccle and she cares more that people understand the culture and concepts she is presenting rather than being an aggressive tester. Very nice during office hours and helpful.

Professor Momdjian is a great teacher and I think that if this course hadn't used Canvas so much, the class would have been great. She often had trouble using Canvas, which resulted in her getting frustrated at students and readings being posted late. She grades very generously and puts an extremely large emphasis on participation on class, but makes it scary to participate. She can be very intimidating and make people feel bad if they don't give her the exact answer she wants. Other than all of this, her assignments were easy and consisted of a weekly blog post every week, two papers and a group project that replaces a final.

She is the best! She is so helpful and kind. Not to mention she's brilliant. I have taken 2 classes with her already and I wish I could take another. I highly recommend this class in terms of workload and pace. I do not have enough good words to say about Professor Momdjian. She does not want any of her students to do poorly in the class which is very encouraging. She also has a good sense of humor.
