I took Chem 14CL with Henary.

You probably won't have much of a choice when it comes to lab professor, but I can at least tell you what to expect.

First, Lab TAs are still as important as ever in this class. He says he "normalizes" the section grades due to different grading styles, but from what I've seen, this is a pretty shotty correction. Good luck with your TA, because lab scores are a very large part of the grade.

Second, lectures are... skippable. Honestly, as long as you get the lecture slides, you're in pretty good shape. 8AM class meant I'd probably spend it sleeping, but on the rare morning when I was awake enough to listen, I was too baffled by the man's accent. It gets easier to understand over time, of course, but I found it pretty frustrating. He tries to teach the lab concepts, but I never found him very effective. He's not a bad lecturer, but it was all just pretty ordinary and at a slightly fast pace. I think I attended two lectures.

Tests are on the harder side, yet manageable. The midterm gives you only 50 minutes. If you were given any less time, you'd have a lot of trouble finishing it. Work hard and work fast, and check if you have time. You need to practice the long problems like titrations so they can be completed quickly and efficiently. Many students did not finish the entire midterm.
The final was easier because of the extra third hour. However, the test was still exceedingly long and I saw only one student turn the test in before time was up.

Overall, I didn't mind Henary. My only problem came from when I found an error on his final, but rather than trying to resolve the issue, he told me that even though the problem was flawed, I should have just followed instructions and not questioned it. That's a real thought-stifling attitude that I don't agree with. Regardless, I still got an A in the class. Best wishes.

I hope Dr. Henary reads these reviews because he needs a reality check.

First of all -- when I took this class, he guaranteed that one of his sections would get extra points added to their grade because the T.A. was a difficult grader. Low and behold, he did not give use NEARLY as many points as was necessary to standardize our T.A section's grades with the rest of the class. It is an absolute shame and a disgrace to any student who works hard. The T.A., Selma, is quite awful. She took off many points for NO reason from our labs. There is NOTHING wrong with fair, honest grading. I support that system. However, she made up her own grading rubric for half of our labs, when in fact she's supposed to follow the professor's grading rubric. Furthermore, if one T.A. takes off many points from his or her section, THEN EVERYONE IN THAT SECTION SHOULD HAVE A NORMALIZED GRADE. Despite what this professor thinks, he did not normalize the grades adequately.

Furthermore, Selma took off lab technique points off of everyone's grade in our T.A. section. It would be difficult for me to say why... She doesn't understand how to grade, unfortunately. Hopefully she will learn though; She's a big girl now.

Took this professor for 14CL. He really is a horrible professor, and was EXTREMELY rude to me when I emailed him asking the grade I received on my final exam. He told me I should have gotten an F in the class, but he gave me a C anyways. How is this a teacher? I got As on all the labs, never missed a class. I did well on the CPRs. I definitely struggled on the exams, but did not deserve an F. The final exam and midterm are only worth 33% of your grade. So even if I flunked these (which I didn't), I should NOT get an F if I do well on the labs (which I did). I hear he hates pre-meds ... so maybe he though I was one (I'm not), but there was really no reason for him to be rude to me. All I asked was for my final exam grade. This is the reason why I hate so many professors at UCLA.

Besides that, he really isn't a good lecturer. He just reads off his slides. Really boring to listen to and a little hard to concentrate in lecture because of his accent, although you do get used to it after a while. His tests really aren't that bad although I didn't do great on them because I had a lot of personal issues (family related) the quarter I took him, and just didn't study at all. But I did do all the labs. Got 100% on most of them. Did fine on the CPRs. Got 42%s on the midterm and the final exam. Apparently this warrants an F in the class. But I received a C. So if you take this professor, don't assume working hard in lab will get you far. You need to do well on his tests. This class is NOT CURVED. Which sucks because ALL CHEM CLASSES SHOULD BE CURVED, esp when the test averages are low.

Dr. Henary -- what a character...

I had this professor for 14CL, and I must admit that he is one of the worst lecturers I've had. He is not very clear and talks very fast. In addition, if you ask him too many questions in office hours, he gets very frustrated and starts to give you looks. He isn't that hard but he certainly does not care about you as a student or teaching for that matter.

In addition, a lot of 14CL is about your lab grades. Therefore, you need to do very well on them to get a good grade. However, you will be exposed to the bullshit system of random T.A. selection. This means that you cannot choose who your T.A. is, and depending on your T.A., your grade can be significantly worse or higher. I say this with great remorse as I know from experience that your T.A. makes a big deal of difference.

You have your typical T.A.s who give free A's on every lab, regardless of your work. Then you have your other T.A.s that literally take off points for your "lab technique" when it isn't even your fault. The grading system, therefore, is severely flawed since the grading system is not standardized. A lot of your grades depend on how difficult your T.A. is on grading.

Because of this reason, you must do yourself a favor and always check your lab work with your T.A.s. They might mess up your grades on accidents or take off extra points from your labs than necessary. Be diligent in fixing this ASAP or else it will not be a good ending.

Professor Henary was OK. Compared to Pang I see why people would want to take Henary but there is not much of a vast improvement. His lectures consists of just reading his handouts and you trying to understand him through his accent which isn't horrible but at times can get cumbersome. His exams are difficult but could be done if you spend a lot of time studying. In his first exam he deducted points from my whole lab section because we did a problem according to the way we had done in lab, practice problems, and in class but somehow he wanted a total different procedure that he never taught. His final was excruciatingly long. A total of 18 pages and cumulative, by the end of the three hours about 90% of the class was still taking the exam. He does curve lab grades across sections so as to be fair to those students whose TA's are painful graders. I was lucky that my TA was very relaxed in his grading which helped me in the class overall. Even though he says that the class isn't curved when grades came out it seemed that the class had to be cus and this is something that other students seemed to say too.
