I'm surprised Professor Henary has managed to keep his position after all these years. He must do some amazing research because he really is a terrible professor. He is incredibly difficult to understand not only because of his accent but also because of how quickly he talks and how he raises the tone of his voice at the end of his sentences. He would also always scribble problems and do them halfway on the board. Sometimes he couldn't even read his own writing. He doesn't Bruincast his lectures or post his slides, which are two things that could help his students understand the material a lot better. Overall, I wouldn't recommend taking 14CL with Henary if you have a choice. Also, Kelly is an amazing TA and she made this class bearable!

One of the worst classes I have ever taken at UCLA. I only went to lecture to get the notes packets because sometimes you absolutely need them to know how to do the post labs. The questions on the midterm were horribly unclear and graded inconsistently. He’s never aware when people raise their hands in lecture. He makes frequent mistakes in lecture and never notices them. Some of the report guidelines were very unclear, and the last one I did ended mid sentence, so I was unsure of what to include.

Lab reports are hard if you don't have some old ones like most of the class will have. Exams were fair but long so pay attention and keep up with the work.

First things first: Henary has a thick accent. Very thick. But once you get used to it, its okay. Go to lecture because he relays a lot of information to you that's important for the labs and isn't on the powerpoint slides. This class requires a lot of work-- you go to lab twice a week-- but overall, it's not that bad. Midterm was okay, the average was around 75%. Final was HUGE but okay-- around 20 pages long and average was about 80%. Overall good professor-- I liked him WAY more than Casey.

Please, do yourself a favor and take this class with Professor Casey (or literally anyone other than Henary).
He is a terrible professor who really doesn't care at all about student learning. His accent is hard to understand, his lecture slides are unclear, and he never explains anything well even when students ask him a clarifying question. The tests are REALLY lab-specific, so make sure to pay attention to why you used certain chemicals in lab and what exactly they do. We didn't cover that at all in lecture so it was kind of just on you to figure it out. You do get to bring a front-back cheat sheet for the final, which is nice, but I still didn't have enough time to finish his final, and the practice test he gave us only somewhat prepared me.
Overall, I thought the concepts and actual labs we did were really cool, but the tests are so out-there with very limited preparation materials that my great lab score wasn't enough to save me from his tests.
Would NOT recommend Hexing Lin as a TA, he has absolutely no idea what is happening and is a harsh grader compared to other TAs.
