Honestly learning this class remotely was a blessing. Labs were much shorter, and only took 20 minutes on average since we just watched videos of the TA doing the experiments. The workload was much heavier than 14BL as we did more experiments, but it was still doable. The midterm and final were both straightforward, but the final was so damn long. The final consisted of 15 pages, and even though Henary said it could be done in 2 and a half hours, I'm pretty sure most people finished in the 5 hours given instead. Contact ************* for a comprehensive midterm and final study guide, practice (past) exams, and labs given for cheap.
This class was not too bad but the labs were sometimes killer! Selling high-scoring labs and old midterms at a cheap price! Text me at **********. (labs are typically the same for years)
The saving grace of this class was that it was online. Labs typically lasted an hour or less and would involve the TA going over the experiment and then talking about questions from the pre-lab and post-lab reports. Lectures were a pretty dull affair with Dr. Henary, and due to class conflicts I watched the recordings of the lectures. Given how rude he was to students who had questions and how his boomer ass still hasn’t figured out how to mute people on Zoom nine months into the pandemic, I’m glad I never attended a single live session.
The course material is not too hard to understand and you learn a lot of useful techniques that you may use in your future career. The main reason this class is annoying is the workload; there’s at least two pre-lab and two post-lab reports due most weeks. However, if you just follow the instructions and ask TAs for help on them when you need it, you’ll most likely do well. The midterm was very straightforward, and the final was significantly harder and took way longer than Henary said it would. I will give him credit for giving us over twice the amount of time to complete both exams though; that was a very generous move on his part.
While Henary was flexible with exams, this doesn’t excuse the fact that he was a shit prof in a boring class. Take this class online if you can because Henary makes up for his utter incompetence by giving out a lot more A’s than he would if 14CL was in-person.
Took this during Fall 2020, covid version. Lectures were optional, labs were usually an hour long, with mandatory attendance, but no cameras on or anything. If you get Richard Liu as your TA, count your blessings bc he is amazing. Selling COVID version of prelabs, post labs, midterm and final for $10 total. Text me at **********
Alright, all I have to say is that the labs were a pain to deal with in the summer since it was about 4 lab reports in a week, but the lab reports aren't too terrible if you reach out to your TA for questions. The exams were relatively fair, considering I took 14BL with Casey and her tests were insanely hard for no reason, so Henary's exams were a breeze compared to Casey. Although Henary wasn't super clear when he was explaining lecture concepts, you could always rely on your TA since they seem to know more information anyways. In general, the class wasn't insanely hard, it was just a lot of busy work in my opinion.
The lectures for this class are pretty confusing, and Dr. Henary goes through the slides really fast so it's a bit hard to keep up. We didn't actually do any of the labs since it was taught online this summer. Attendance is counted for the online lab sections, but they almost always ended early. The TAs usually used the lab sections to go over the concepts Dr. Henary taught in lecture and how to do the pre and post labs. Before the exams, the TAs would use the lab section to review for the test, and these were always really helpful. The midterm and final were somewhat difficult, but Dr. Henary gave a lot of time to complete them.
If you're looking to actually learn the material in this class, your TA will probably be a better lecturer than Dr. Henary. I found the lectures to be confusing, and whenever Henary was asked a question, he would either answer it in a convoluted manner or tell the student not to worry about it. A lot of this course rides on having a fantastic TA, which I was lucky to have since they grade your labs (the majority of your grade) and the exams. Taking the class online was a unique experience because we didn't have to do the actual labs (we watched videos instead); however, it is still expected that we complete the pre and post labs, which are about the same workload as 14BL. Finally, the exams are relatively challenging, but if you do the provided practice and attend review sessions, they should be doable.
I really enjoyed taking this class with professor Henary.
He was very helpful inside and outside of class and his lectures were very clear and relevant to what is going on with lab. I was honestly able to learn a lot this quarter.
If you plan on taking this class in the future, I urge you to stay and listen to his lecture and take notes!! A lot of student don't do this, which in my opinion is why they don't do well in this course. The midterms and final were really straightforward and relevant to everything he taught us in class.
Honestly, I feel like everyone bags on Henary way too much. Yes, he has a huge accent but you'll get accustomed to it soon enough. He's extremely helpful and holds so many extra OH for students to go to. The labs are chill and his midterm and final were very straightforward.
