I took this online. Henary is very hard to understand. It's not just his accent; his explanations just aren't very clear. One of the worst things that stood out to me is when he was going over how to solve a problem on his slides, and he just verbally did the calculations. It was impossible to follow. I guess you can't blame him if he doesn't own a stylus/tablet, but surely with a little effort he could've figured something out. Another thing that irked me, and maybe this isn't a valid complaint, is that he would constantly ask "is this clear to you guys? Hello? Hello guys?" and wouldn't move on unless he got a few replies like"yes makes sense." I know he was trying to get input but it wasted time on already short lectures when we had to constantly tell him to move on. IMO the etiquette should be to listen if anyone says "no I don't understand," otherwise assume everyone understands. On a more positive note, Henary was very accommodating to the lockdown/protest situation. He apparently made the tests easier for us, which was very nice of him. Still wouldn't recommend this professor though.

Now for TAs. I heard from people that they relied heavily on TAs to clarify material. My online TA was Kevin Chandler and he taught us nothing. We joined zoom for 10 minutes, he took roll, and then we left. Even before tests, when Henary told us the TAs would hold review sessions, Kevin didn't prepare anything. He just asked every week if we had any questions. But as TA he should really prepare SOMETHING for us. Also there were two times he was more than 15 minutes late to class. He was a lenient grader on labs for the most part. First day of class, I was like "this guy is so chill that's awesome," but by the end I realized too chill was a bad thing.

Overall, I thought this was a good class that was well accommodated online. Our labs were much shorter this particular quarter because we watched videos of the TAs doing experiments, and based our lab reports from the data given to us. I thought the workload for this class was reasonable. Henary is an understanding professor, but isn't that great of a lecturer as lectures do tend to go at an insanely fast speed (though he does post the lecture recordings so its fine in the end). His midterm/final was also reasonable and did not test on anything not taught during the quarter. If you would like study guides/practice midterms, feel free to email *************

Though the content is not too complex, the class is time consuming and Henary may be extremely difficult to understand at times. I highly recommend reading each lecture before class (this helped SO much) , and emailing the prof/TA if anything is unclear afterwards. Both were very helpful. The midterm was very similar to the practice sheet provided, while the final included problems that were not all covered in the practice packet so be sure to study beyond that worksheet. Overall , both exams were not difficult . I also highly recommend not leaving labs for last minute because they can be very time consuming especially post-labs where we were required to graph on excel. It is sometimes tedious and can get frustrating. Lastly, labs were conducted by watching videos so the lab discussions never took the entire allotted class period.

Professor was always extremely unclear and unhelpful. The directions on the labs were often very confusing. The material wasn't difficult but this class required so much time for tedious and useless lab reports.

I took this lab when it was all online, so take this review with a grain of salt.

I actually enjoyed the labs, even though we didn't actually get to do the labs. We just watched short videos of TAs doing the labs and used their collected data for the pre and post lab reports. I did not enjoy the actual lectures as much, just because it was a little difficult to understand him and he didn't really use his online platform that well. He was super accommodating with the global situation, giving us ample time for the midterm and final.
I would say that attending his lectures was helpful in writing up the post-labs. Some of the analysis questions on the lab would be a little funky, but he would usually cover all the post-lab logistics in his lectures. Also, he went over a lot of examples in lecture that seemed irrelevant, but they showed up on the midterm and final! Although the lectures were pretty unengaging, I found that they were pretty important in getting a solid grade in the class.
Also, if you have questions about the pre/post labs, ASK YOUR TA. Different TAs look for different things in the lab reports, and more importantly, may even have different answers for the same questions. I went to office hours for a different TA and used her formula but got marked off because my TA did that problem completely differently.
Honestly, I think Henary tries really hard to accommodate his students and create a conducive learning environment. He has A LOT of office hours and really encourages his students to attend and ask questions. He can be a little vague in what he wants, but for any specifics, I would just ask your TA, since they're the ones doing all the grading anyway.

This review is relevant to Chem 14BL taken online during the pandemic.
The professor was overall very accommodating of the situation, and he made his final cover only the topics after the midterm. His lectures definitely are not the most clear and you don't really need to attend them to succeed as long as you work out the problems on the slides on your own + understand the concepts. The content is mostly all a review of Chem 14B; the only new information is titration problems.
One problem a lot of students had was inconsistencies in grading since the professor didn't provide a standardized rubric (so the TAs were all telling the students different things). Just make sure to email your TA with any clarifications and don't rely on what other students from different TAs tell you. Overall, my TA (shoutout to Roberto!) was super lenient and understanding.
We have one post-lab and one pre-lab due every week, 1 midterm, 1 final, and 1 CPR assignment. The post-lab and pre-lab is a lot of busy work. I would recommend joining a group chat with the rest of the students. Also if you can find someone that would be willing to share their past labs with you it would make your life a lot easier.

I took this class during the pandemic so there were obviously a lot of changes pertaining to conducting the actual experiment. Therefore, we watched lab experiment videos during the lab. The workload got a bit tedious at some point but as long as you stay on top of it, you're good. Understanding specific instructions from TAs would help since they are grading. He did not test us on any foreign subject which is great. The midterms and finals were fair. Overall, a pretty good class! The professor is kinda quirky which is funny :)

We took this class online (lol) so it was quite odd, but it thankfully meant that we didn't have to do any of the labs. Some of the post-labs are tedious, but both the midterm and final were not too bad. Make sure you read the slides, do his practice exam, and do the pre-lab questions before the exam and you'll be in good shape. Also it's very dependent on your TA so make sure you get on your TA's good side lol.

In comparison to the previous reviews written, I have taken this class in person (so feel free to reap the merits of my comment in accordance).

As someone who comes from the East, I had an INCREDIBLY hard time understanding him. Lectures always felt as though I’m learning a new language in the process, although spoken in English. It got to a point where in the first week I just stopped attending since the slides gave all of the information anyways.

For the midterm, we got a 75% average as a whole class. It got a point where he just started providing free regrades and being incredibly generous. But when discussing the midterm after knowing this average, he kept asserting that it was “easy” and “incredibly easy”.

He gives out practice problems and stuff but none of them have the way the solutions were derived and solved. It was all just plain answers. And given how limited the office hours were, it was hard to ask the TA’s all of the questions and solutions.

As per the labs, in which the TA’s are leading, those were the best moments of this class. Since it’s an introductory class, you won’t deal with crazy solutions, so fear not.

Know what you’re getting into before you enroll in this class. I urge you to take another professor in order to get your quality UCLA education and to not harm your GPA. This advice is coming from a 3.95 cGPA UCLA student.
