When I took 112, it was on gender/feminism and I wasn't really that engaged with the material if I'm honest. The novels were a little dry and a few of the films we watched were older and more avant garde, so I found it hard to really enjoy what we were learning about, but I think that's just down to my personal taste. I still really enjoyed the course and Professor Zubiaurre was amazing. She's really caring and always wants to hear from her students, which makes it so much more worth it to come to class because it means not having to sit through a boring lecture. She only showed us slides a few times (to give historical context on what we were reading, etc.) but when she did, I really enjoyed the presentations because they were very visual-oriented. I was also really glad that she was such a lenient grader (at least compared to the uptight English professors that I'm used to) and gave us freedom to write about whatever we wanted. I had a good experience and I would definitely take her again!

When I took German 112 it looked at emigres from Germany during the 1930s to Hollywood. It was so interesting and Professor de Zubiaurre was so sweet and I am so sad I didn't have her in person. The class overall was interesting and the midterm was just to get started on the final project, which was so helpful and graded very generously. I had her for the first quarter we had online and she was very understanding which was great, and then she got rid of the final project and gave us the opportunity to compare what was going on in the US with 1930s Germany. I would definitely recommend any class with her.

So when I took it, German 112 was about German feminism. The professor is very passionate about feminism and her German culture. It was really fascinating for me because I didn't have prior knowledge of any of those fields, and I just took this class as an elective upper division. Her class is graded on a midterm and a final, which were very broad prompts, and the class had an appropriate time to finish all the take home exams. She looks for quality not quantity for the written assignments, and she's not the harshest grader. Some of the required material (the readings and films) were a bit bland, but I understand her reasoning for incorporating them into the course. I came in very fresh and new to the material, and even though it was a once-a-week, three-hour seminar, I feel like I have learned so much. You do have to watch movies and read novels on your own time, but all-in-all, a very great class with a wonderful professor!
