Quarter: Summer 2019
Grade: A
Sept. 25, 2019

I just finished the six-week, summer version of this online course and it is (without a shadow of doubt) the easiest class I have had at UCLA—and I’m a senior. I recommend this course to ANYONE. I literally watched three of the eighteen or so assigned videos and did none of the readings except for when I was working through a quiz or trying to find quotes for the midterm and final.
The quizzes are untimed and super easy— you can find a lot of the answers through a quick google search. The midterm paper is an absolute easy A and although I was pretty worried for the final( as I did basically none of the required work for the course) I ended up getting an A by going through information I just found online. No joke.

Aside from three or so weekly quizzes, a super short midterm, and final paper( comprised of two ~1,000 word essay questions), there are also weekly discussion posts which are super easy and nothing to stress about either.

Seriously, take this class.

Quarter: Summer 2016
Grade: I

Professor Hunt is honestly one of the best educators I have had the good fortune of knowing and learning from. Her knowledge on the topic is enormous and she is a terrific lecturer. No lecture was boring or dull. She connects history to how it's relevant today, which is what really matters at the end. She truly cares about her students, her emails are very warm and kind and very approachable also. I'm sad I took this online so didn't get to meet her in person but her compassion still could be felt. Workload wasn't too bad: weekly readings, discussion board responses, and small quizzes. The textbook was interesting too, not surprising because she wrote it herself. The midterm and finals questions aren't too bad at all. If you watch all the lectures, you'll be fine. I highly recommend her!! She will be worth it.

Professor Hunt isn't teaching anymore undergraduate classes (devastating), but she's amazing and I just wanted to let everyone know that. I genuinely pity people who won't have the opportunity to learn from her.

Professor Hunt is amazingly sweet. At first, she appeared somewhat intimidating to me, and seemed to have a rather blunt manner. But as the quarter went on, I got to know her and found her to be one of the best professors at UCLA.
What makes Hunt great is that not only is she kind, her lectures are exceptionally engaging, and her knowledge of and interest in history is obvious. I have chosen many, actually the majority, of my GE courses based on whether the class was known to be an "Easy A". I took this class because it allowed me to attend classes only 3 days a week, and I'm happy that I ended up in it. What really struck me about Hunt was that she actually went out of her way to get to know her students. When a student raised his/her hand to answer a question, she would ask their name and repeat it back in an effort to memorize it. I'm not much of a participator in big lectures, but I did sit near the front and attended every lecture. When Hunt arrived before class, she would chat with the students sitting near her, including myself. She actually learned my name and the names of the students around me, and would come in every day, and ask us how we were. I have never before had a professor put forth the effort to get to know students in lecture. She is not the type that will only learn your name if you attend office hours, she wants to know everyone regardless of their interest in the course. Again, I was truly impressed by Hunt and would jump at the opportunity to take another class with her.
In regard to the course itself, History 1C was not a blatantly "Easy A". There were 3 essays (short, only 2 pages each), weekly quizzes (map or short answer, with the q's told to you ahead of time), a blue book midterm and final. I genuinely expected a B, so I was pleasantly surprised to receive an A. I think this had to do with the awesome TA I had (Susan Cribbs). I don't think that Hunt has structured this class to be difficult, but rather to be one for which a fair amount of effort can be put forth, and an impressive amount of knowledge can be gained. It is because of this class that I am genuinely considering majoring in history.

Professor Hunt goes out of her way to promote student learning--she posts lecture outlines ahead of time online, and posts her power point slides online as well. The class is also podcast. Hunt also does a good job of integrating non-textual material into her lectures, such as video clips and music. However, if you are looking for an easy GE, do NOT take this class. There are almost weekly quizzes, three 2-page papers (which are much harder than you might originally assume), a midterm, a presentation (depending on your TA), and a LOT of reading. Unfortunately, the reading doesn't really seem to tie into her lectures all that well, so you could probably save time by skipping reading the main textbook. She gives you study guides for the exams ahead of time, but the essay topics require a lot of preparation and a lot of thought. If you're really interested in the history of modern Europe, it might be a good class for you, but if you're just trying to get a GE out of the way, or you are a history major who is not particularly interested in modern Europe, but need to take 2 of the 1-series classes, you may want to consider a different class, or at least taking it with another professor.
