I'm selling notes and class material for the course for $70. I took very thorough notes directly onto her lecture notes typing everything as she spoke, so that each slide comes with everything that she said in class. If you keep up with every lecture the class is very doable and an A is obtainable. If you fall behind it will be very difficult to catch up as it is a very detailed and thorough class. Contact at ********** for the material.
I loved this class and do not regret taking it with Arispe. It was my favorite of the MCDB classes, and partly because she was so passionate about each lecture presented. This class does require a lot of time and studying, and you must be able to think experimentally/critically to do well on her exams, but I feel I gained more out of it than any class I've taken at UCLA so far. She no longer requires textbook readings, since she feels they're outdated, but there is a LOT of other material involved including online quizzes, reports, in depth knowledge of the papers, and an essay that I wouldn't recommend leaving to the last minute! She doesn't grade on a curve, but she does provide some extra credit towards the end and would constantly say she's willing to adapt to the needs of the class. Know the powerpoints and all other resources IN DEPTH and be sure you understand things conceptually. The final was very hard but somehow the average wasn't low, so I think they graded generously.
Dr. Arispe is an incredible lecturer and person. She uses relevant drugs and diseases throughout the course to connect the basic molecular sciences shes teaching to the larger problem at hand. This class encompasses all of the subjects that made me interested in cellular biology enough to major in it and over the class was a blast. Just make sure to START STUDYING EARLY. I can not stress this point enough because all of the online material and lecture content add up super quickly.
I have book notes, lecture notes, and detailed study guides for each of the midterms as well as old midterms to study for $45. She does pull a lot of content from previous exams so if you can get your hand on past midterms it help tremendously. **********
165A with Dr. Arispe has definitely been a challenging class. In my opinion, a great segment of this difficulty arises from the immense amount of work/time that is expected of a student in the class (weekly online quizzes and videos as well as the papers and reports assigned on almost a weekly basis).
Dr. Arispe is a great lecturer that is very engaging and is very knowledgeable on the topics presented. However, at times, Dr. Arispe can be quite unclear when it comes to what exactly she wants us to get from a particular slide or reading.
Many have mentioned, including Dr. Arispe, that the textbook readings are required and I actually tried completing them the first two weeks. Unfortunately, the immense amount of time all the other class requirements requested simply made reading impossible when balancing 3 other upper-divs.
The exams in this class are pretty fair (seems that they covered only lecture material). I felt that the best way to study the material was by making flashcards and re-reading the papers (which are also tested on the exams).
Overall this course was definitely very interesting, as I felt that I definitely learned a lot. However, I just wish Dr. Arispe would fine-tune the information she expects us to learn as it is simply too much I believe.
Amazing class, this course requires you to stay on top of the material. It is a very detail-oriented class and requires and tests your true understanding of cell biology so make sure you know it well enough to apply it to problems on tests otherwise you'll have trouble.
A great professor overall. My ONLY negative on her course was the readings. I guess I was just so used to not reading textbooks because in all of the LS courses that I have taken, the exams were lecture based only. But here, you have to do a considerable amount of reading, but I guess that should be expected in an upper division course. So yeah, read the book and take a lot of notes because the exams are definitely based off the readings. Also, she is really nice and very willing to help. I found her office hours to be very helpful.
She's a pretty good professor. Her exams are easy. The average was pretty high for the midterms. I think the first midterm was in the high 70's and the second midterm had an average in the low 80's. So yeah, they weren't too difficult. Grading scale is fair. A curve is only employed if the averages are low which is rarely the case. Very concerned. She's overall very effective and I recommend her highly. You will learn a lot!
Her exams are based on her lecture and the assigned readings. I suggest taking copious notes.
