Quarter: Winter 2016
Grade: N/A
March 3, 2016

I pretty much agree with everything the previous reviewer posted on 2/19/16. As far as being disrespectful, professor has called out students who were on their phones or sleeping and had no problem reprimanding them in front of class. I understand how she would be irritated with that behavior but they way she's handled it was not only petty and annoying, but a waste of everyone's time when she could have just asked them politely to stop what they were doing and moved on. The pop quizzes in class are kind of a bummer as well, even if you do the readings; I'm scared they're gonna kill my grade. Those are two elements which makes this feel like a high school class. However, one of the most frustrating aspects in this class is the lack of clarity in how to do specific assignments and projects. Her directions are terrible and no one actually knows what is going on with an assignment until a bunch of students have to ask and pry for information. It's just a bit shocking to me because I've never had a professor like this, even back in my community college.

Despite this, there are positive aspects of this class. I took it to learn more about my Filipino heritage and have definitely learned a fair amount about Filipino history and Filipino American relations. I got to see a super enjoyable play (which is required and kind of expensive). The movie shown in class, "Amigo" was really good and we also had a representative from the Pilipino Worker's Center talk to us; the whole section on San Francisco's International Hotel was valuable as well. Honestly, those were the highlights of the class and you could probably learn and enjoy these things without having to take the class, haha. On the bright side, the Keyword presentations were pretty cool and fun, the students in the class seemed nice, and professor Burns is very knowledgeable in what she teaches. Overall, it's hard to say whether I would recommend this class or not. If you're someone like me who is very interested in learning about their Filipino heritage, then possibly. But as for an easy-ish and fun elective, there may be better classes out there for that.

Quarter: Winter 2016
Grade: B

I've had my share of horrible professors at UCLA but she is by far one of the most disorganized and disrespectful professor/educator I have ever had. Half of the class was student presentations, movies, and guest speakers. On the days she does give lectures, she spends one hour on a topic that should of taken no less than 10 minutes. On top of that, she assigns on average 100 pages of reading per week on topics she briefly mentions in class. To make sure you do the reading, she gives unannounced pop quizzes that are worth 20% of your grade. She gives no rubric and very vague instructions on her assignments so you have no idea how your papers was graded. Overall, avoid this professor. Avoid her like the plague. It will be relatively easy to get a B and very hard to get an A unless she likes you. However, the frustration you will get from her teaching methods and lack of respect she gives to her students is not worth the B. I wouldn't take a class with her again even if it was a guaranteed A and Emma Watson was enrolled in the class.

I guess I had very high expectations for the class. The class was structured as following: pop quizzes (we had five throughout the quarter); one timeline project; a Filipino Experience in Los Angeles project; an in-class presentation; and an in-class final. Overall, the class is relatively easy, but you do have to do some work and it consumes time. The professor is a good person, but her teaching methods are not quite effective. The class was disorganized and very hard to follow along. It becomes tedious to go to class as the quarter progresses. I guess that if you like ethnic studies classes, you ought to enjoy the classes. Not my particular interest.
