I’m not really a fan of history, but this class was manageable. Sometimes it could be pretty interesting. He tells you everything you need to study for the tests. My advice is to go to every lecture - even if you don’t pay attention, you will still kind of subconsciously pay attention and then you will learn something. The discussions are also a nice recap of the week. I was kind of annoyed that we had to do a “listening exam” - it was like a second midterm, which is so extra for a GE. But it was all pretty easy. It’s probably a lot more interesting if you’re Jewish or Western European yourself.
Mid GE, super boring tho.
Overall, these are your assignments:
1. Propaganda Observations (you just keep a log of all the propaganda you see in a day, write a paragraph and turn it in)
2. Concert Report (the prof has u go to a concert and just write about it (2 pgs) and no worries if you can't make it, he just has to watch the recording)
3. Midterm (short answer, but he prepares you very well)
4. Listening Exam (he plays 4 songs, and you'll need to name the song, composer, context, theme)
5. Final project (6-8 pgs, make a playlist of 5-6 songs covered in class and write about it)
The lectures were so boring and hard to follow since bro doesn't put a lot of stuff on his slides so you're trying to figure out the song names and composers while trying to keep up. He does post his lectures on BruinLearn though.
Luka is a great TA though, super patient and understanding and prepared us well for the exams and assignments.
This class may seem daunting since it's a very specific topic for a GE, but Dr. Black prepares you very well for everything so looking back, I would take this course again.
