Highly recommend this class!! Grade was based off of discussion attendance, final screenplay, and a few other assignments that were given during discussion. Because this quarter was online every lecture was podcasted and posted — only discussions were live. The final project is pretty easy (10 pages of a screenplay) and my TA gave ample feedback to help me get a good grade. Be prepared to share your work with people in your discussion. Basically guaranteed an A.

This has been by far my favorite class taken at UCLA. Voorhees is absolutely insane in all of the best ways, class was consistently entertaining. You spend about half of EVERY lecture watching a movie which is awesome. There is no homework for lecture, and the assignments for section all lead up to helping you write 10 pages of a screenplay which is also your final. Just for reference, the first draft of that was due Week 5 and the next 5 weeks were just minor editing (so basically no final or tests or anything). My TA (Cat) was super cool and interested in helping us. You can tell she really just wanted to see effort and that we were trying, and you're golden. I mean come on the class is 50% attendance. That is the one caveat -- you have to sign into every lecture and section (but that is LITERALLY the only possible negative for this class). Voorhees opened her first lecture by saying "If people told you to take this class because it's 'easy' or it's a 'guaranteed A' well... they were right."

This class during remote instruction is not taught by Voorhees, but rather with prerecorded lectures by George Huang, so if you want to see Voorhees, don’t take it while remote instruction is in place. With that said, the lectures were very well organized and every week there was one film to watch, a 200-word writing assignment, 2 CCLE discussion posts, and a 5 to 8 question multiple choice quiz. In the second half of the quarter, there was one live discussion with a TA to do a table read of each student’s writing, which ran for over 2.5 hours for my group. No midterm, and final was based in a 15-page original screenplay. The workload was not the lightest, especially given how some other film classes are. The textbooks were needed to do the quizzes, but they were available for free through CCLE Library Resources if you use the UCLA VPN. Overall, I’d still say it was a very easy course but the asynchronous experience does not live up to the other reviews for Voorhees here.

This class was an awesome introduction into the film department at UCLA. It was easy to take online but still had very engaging lectures and assignments. The TAs were all super invested in their students and gave really good feedback every step of the way. I already had some screenwriting experience going into the class, but it seemed easy enough for people to get a good grade even if they were learning from scratch.

Class is super easy, pretty interesting, easy A. Only thing I will say is that I have no idea who this professor is. She had a short intro video about herself, but she used another professor's lectures (George Huang, I believe, who's a great lecturer so I'm not complaining) and we had no other contact with her whatsoever. You can easily do without the discussion section & it won't affect your grade. The entire class was just easy & the movies were dope.

Very light, easy, fun class. I took this for fun and really enjoyed having a creative outlet outside of my normal classes. That said, I think you could learn the material very easily just by looking online or reading through the textbook on your own. It was asynchronous, and the professor basically told you only to interact with the TAs. Even the lecture videos were recorded by a different professor, so there is very little real interaction with anyone. My TA was super nice but didn't give a ton of feedback outside of formatting stuff. I think the TAs get pretty swamped reading through everyone's stuff so they just give a "Good Job" or maybe a single comment. So while it was super fun to write and read the scripts, it felt like I was doing it on my own. If this class is going to cost you money or take up a lot of your units or something like that, I would skip. But, if you have open space and enjoy writing, definitely take! Super easy and a light workload, fun topics and movies. I often did the work for this class as a break from other classes because it was pretty enjoyable and didn't feel like work at all.

I loved this class! Definitely my favorite I've taken so far. The lectures were done by another professor, George Huang. He was highly entertaining and made the basics of screenwriting pretty easy to understand. My TA Caitlin Wolf was also amazing. Super responsive and always helpful. Overall this was a great class and I will definitely be taking this professor again if I can.

Easiest class I’ve ever taken at UCLA. Show up to the lectures and discussions, turn in your final screenplay and you WILL get an A (she says this every class basically). If you want to take a laid back yet fun class TAKE THIS ONE. Just do the work, show up to class and you WILL get an A GUARANTEED.

Vorhees is an awesome professor. Great personality and is funny and kind. Took this class during the Fall of 2016 and didn't regret it one bit. The only downside might be that attendance is required. Lots of athletes in this class as well so that should tell you something. Not too much work and no mid-term or final. You may have a short quiz near the end of the quarter or you may not. Depends on what your TA wants to do. All the TAs seem really cool as well. My TA was Sarah and she was super nice. Seemed just a tad bit unprepared at times but still a great TA and gives good grades. This was definitely a fun class and would highly recommend it.
