I took this class winter quarter of my freshman year and did not mind it at all. It was an online class with an online mid-term and in-person final exam. The midterm was not bad at all, but the final exam was weighted 50% of our grade so you had to do well to do well in the class. All of the lectures were pre-recorded and he just read off a script. The professor is very passionate about the subject but genuinely was all self-teaching and studying. I wouldn't say it was bad at all, just make sure to prepare for the final exam!
I took this class asynch winter quarter and the weekly work was very manageable. There were weekly quizzes and online lectures he posted. The discussion sections are in person and they took attendance. The midterm/final were definitely harder than the quizzes and were difficult but overall I liked the class.
If you take this class asynchronously, you are really on your own. The lecture videos are quite literally useless in terms of adding value to the slides. The saving grace for this class is that the content is extremely basic and easy to understand. Just by looking over the slides and going to section should be enough to really understand the content. The exams are pretty straightforward and neither particularly easy nor difficult. Overall, this class is pretty lame (as expected from an asynchronous class) but is still pretty easy to get an A in. He does curve though, so shoot for a 94+ to be safe.
This class was asynchronous for me. It was pretty easy as well. We just had to watch one lecture per week and do a weekly quiz that was 4-5 questions. However, I recommend listening and actually understanding the content, as the midterm is pretty faced past and semi-difficult. Overall, I recommend this class!
This class is so incredibly easy, I probably put maybe 3 hours a week total into this class. and Professor Ohanian was solid. His lectures are pretty straightforward and he does a pretty good job explaining the concepts, but the concepts themselves were very elementary. The textbook for this class also does a great job explaining the concepts. The midterm and final are also not very hard. My TA Maria Guerrero was absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend taking this class with her if you can. All in all, I am very glad I took this class with Ohanian
Very easy class, he follows a strict grading scheme and ended up curving my grade down so be aware of that. I will say that Ohanian really does not care about any of his students for this class and will not put in any effort to help out. Discussions are mandatory.
DO NOT take this class online asynchronous. I thought that it'd be easy but it's clear that Ohanian puts little to no effort into the asynchronous courses. I'll admit some fault on my part since I definitely let myself get behind on the course work, but I still would've liked to see at least some effort put in by the department. Midterm and Final were surprisingly tough, even though they were both online. Definitely wouldn't take again.
Honestly, the other review from 2023 explains this class perfectly. You really have to self-teach yourself and professor Lee doesn't interact much with his students. The hw practice questions were way different than the actual test questions. I had the feeling that given the tests were online, they made the test hard to finish on purpose. With both the midterm and final, the questions were not like our practice questions and the time given was simply not enough. I didn't even get the chance to review my answers with how little time was given and I tanked the final. The class is fine, but I think its probably better to take a class that's not asynchronous if you want to take econ 1.
This was a pretty easy class overall but hard to not slack in. I took it when it was asynchronous and the only grades we were getting each week were from attending the TA sessions and from a weekly quiz on the material that was 4-5 questions long. Grades were composed of 10% TA attendance, 15% quizzes, 25% midterm, and 50% for the final. Both of the exams were online and on canvas. This year over 80% of the class ended with above a B so there wasn’t a curve. The professor posts videos of his lectures but he just reads off the slides and he encouraged us to read the textbook along with the slides. The quizzes and practice exams were extremely easier than the midterm and final so they weren’t super helpful to study. A lot of the past reviews highly recommend purchasing MindTap but this year he suggested we didn’t get it because they couldn’t get a reasonable price for it. Overall, this was a very manageable but forgettable class.
