Winter 2023 - Professor Ohanian does not seem to care much for students in this class. He appears on Zoom once every two weeks just to repeat what he has already covered in the recorded lectures using another set of slides, saving minimal time for additional Office Hours questions. There is far too little practice questions in the MCQ format of the Midterms and Finals (only 4-5 questions a week that rarely asks about the same content as the test questions): the practice questions in the textbook are formatted completely differently and the practice midterms and finals have far too few questions compared to the real one (e.g. the practice finals had 31 questions while the real one has 76). I understand that they used the Mindtap app for practice MCQ questions in the past years but this year it was discontinued because it was too expensive. However, there is no replacement found for the practices on Mindtap and the exam questions continue to come from Mindtap. Overall, because of the lack of well-organized practice, there is no good mechanism to assess how you are doing in this course and how well you understood the topics until it is too late- when you get bonked in the Finals. This just reinforces the sense that this course is poorly organized and the general feeling (this may be subjective) that the professor is teaching this course part-time and has little attention to spare for ECON 1 students.

Fall 2024 - This class is great! Such an easy and interesting class for an extra unit! Professor Ohanion loves teaching about economics and is passionate about sports! The workload is insanely light- only two readings a week. The students get to pick the articles too, so the class really is interesting and engaging.

This was by far one of the best Economics experiences I have had at UCLA; Professor Ohanian adds energy to all his lectures - with jokes and presentations of his lessons that are simple to follow; if you scan a chapter and then come to class, you will totally understand generally what is going on. His lectures draw ideas from the reading, however he has his own spin on lessons - such as adding derivations - which make the material more realistic and interesting. He constantly announces opportunities to come and ask him questions, and best of all he makes his midterm OPTIONAL! He understands that things happen, and thus he allows your final to count for your full grade; this is fair, because you will get an A on the final if you put time into studying efficiently. Professor Ohanian is one of the best, and has a very very good teaching style; TRUST ME, TAKE HIS CLASS! I don't understand why anyone who is an average econ student like me would not!

Fall 2016 - I LOVE THIS PROFESSOR! he is wonderful. he is so knowledgable and he makes econ so much easier to understand. He uses articles to relate to what he's teaching which really helped me learn the concepts. I will say that it is a lot more math than you would expect for a course titled history of capitalism, but he does the math in class to help you understand the point of what he's teaching, and the best part is that he doesn't make you do nonsense algebra, you just take derivatives to understand what you're learning. He is one of the only econ professors at UCLA that understands how much students struggle in this major and he really focuses on concepts and not just daunting, annoying math or algebra. One midterm 25%, homework assignments in lab is 25% and the lab isn't time consuming at all, one final that's 50%, and if you do better on the final he'll usually put more weight on that.
