AVOID!! When people say their writing improved, it may be true, but is it worth it?
What you basically learn is this: be original (no more 5 paragraph essays), DON'T generalize (be specific), and write your personal opinions (not plot summary). I went through the love-hate mindset. I also felt the professor didn't exactly know how to teach. Students in class asked legit questions about readings, and all she says is: "I don't know, what do you think?" Also, she is very frank about what she thinks which is fine EXCEPT she has no patience or respect. -What- you learn might be valuable, but -she- is not a good professor. I highly recommend not taking this class because it is hard (people who shouldn't get A's get them like the person a few posts down, and people who are good at writing don't because Lauri doesn't have any writing sensitivity. She reads essays that have three lines start with "He" and when students point this out as a criticism says, "Wow you pay more attention to detail than me! I didn't even notice." You do NOT want her as your English teacher. You will hate it unless you are the rare person who she likes).
