I absolutely love Lauri. I think she is terrific.
Before I took her class, some sophomore students told me that she was very hard to deal with. I also saw the comments below from my fellow Chinese saying that she was being harsh to international students. As a result, I almost dropped her class.
However, after a summer with Lauri, I am very happy that I didn't drop her class. She's been very helpful and the whole class loves her. She really helped me with my major writing problems. Besides, she is very sweet in person.
Conclusion: If you are looking for a class that you don't need much work on it or a gpa-guarateed class, I don't recommend you to take Lauri's class. But if you're ready to learn and to put effort to improve your writing, don't miss Lauri.
Lauri Mattenson was amazing. She is extremely concerned with her students and incredibly down to earth. If you have the chance to take a course with her in a small student setting, DO IT. Her teaching style is very different from traditional classes. She taught me how to write more critically, but also taught me to view my college experience in a different light than before. If you are looking for a professor that will make you work for your grade - but don't worry, you will enjoy working for it - then you should definitely take a class with her.
*I took HC 65W with her
Mattenson is an excellent teacher.
She is able to see the directions in which you can immediately improve and directions you can reach over time.
I initially resented that I was required to take this writing class, but it turned out to be one of my favorites. As well as I believed I already wrote, Lauri (as she asks you to call her) not only gave me notes that improved my writing in ways that had not occurred to me, but provided opportuities to stretch my writing creatively.
Look, most of what you'll be doing at UCLA is writing papers, so getting a quarter of training from Mattenson is one of the best favors you could do for yourself. She's also genuinely encouraging of her students to pay her visits during future quarters if they need help on papers for other classes. If you have the time to take her up on that, do it.
She's a very nice person and very attentive to each persons writing and particularly to their progress in the class.
She'll make you a better writer and it will be worth it.
Lauri is an absolutely amazing professor. Those complaining about her on BruinWalk are probably only complaining because they received a grade below an A (or the grade they didn't want). She is the type of professor that will give you the grade you deserve. With that being said, so long as you are willing to do the work, you will excel and end up with a good grade. Most students expect to get an A on their papers straight off the back, but Lauri teaches you the importance of failure, and working hard for something you really want/need.
Take her class only if you are the type of person who is willing to work for your grade, not just have an A+ magically appear right in front of you.
I personally loved how she made me work for my A. She taught me to be a more independent and passionate writer. She is very enthusiastic and passionate about writing, and that type of personality definitely brushes onto other students so long as they are willing to have it.
eventually encouraged me to drop her class.
She is quite a hypocrite. She encourages people to be different without knowing what it means to be different.
After the people who disagree with her drop, only the ones who agree are left to be in her favor. From the first two weeks I was there she MADE you come in to office hours as though it wasn't a choice for adults to make. Any fault will also be directed to you as yours. I ended up spending more time waiting in front of her class than writing anything up.
I had the pleasure to take her during summer 2013. At first I was very reluctant to take English Composition 3 after reading the comments. However, over the days I learned to appreciate her class.
To earn a good grade in her class, you must read the articles and be prepare to discuss them in class. She is not your typical woman professor. She challenges you in order to improve your english composition.
Independence is important. I only went to her office hours once and I got to know her better. She wants her students to think for themselves and learn on their own. I ended up getting an B+ in her.
Take her class.
I absolutely loved Lauri, she is a wonderful professor. I went into English Comp 3 with such bad anxiety because I hate writing, especially at UCLA. She is a tough grader but that's okay! If you are willing to fix it up with her corrections you will get an A. I looked forward to going to class each week and participating. The key to a good grade is participating, revising essays, and going to office hours. I got to know Lauri really well, it was almost therapeutic talking to her. She is a great resource for recommendations in the future!
