I had him for chem 14A and chem 14B, pretty sure I'm scarred forever because of this guy. I mean he's SUCH a sweet professor, but those midterms/quizzes/finals were pretty much h** I worked my butt off just to get a B in both 14A and 14B. 14B is easier than 14A (not the contexts but it's easier because you're used to his teaching style).

SHOUT OUT TO IDEAN!!! He was a UA that helped me more than lavelle is.

overall, this class requires a lot of work. I did all of the textbook problems, past tests, ect. I think you have to firmly master the concept to deserve an A. You have to be able to pretty much be able to teach a whole group of students the whole concept to get an A. He could throw anything at you. He's not predictable.

Lavelle is not a good professor. His lectures are pretty dry and can be covered by reading the book. Half of the teaching is done by yourself, Khan Academy, or the TAs. His finals and midterms all usually consist of twists and tricks that you have to learn how to deal with. There is also barely, if any, curve for this class. I got a 91% for my raw score and still received an A- in this class, meaning that there was either no curve or the curve was less than 2%. I don't know which of those is worse, considering that this is a pretty difficult class. Unfortunately, I don't think that Scerri is much better so you'll have to suffer through one of them for a quarter.

I took both 14A and 14B with Lavelle.

I think he is a fair professor, although I don't know how much curves boost your grades by at the end of the semester because I got an A in 14A and an A+ in 14B.

14A: I took AP Chem in high school and got As and a 5, but that was way back in sophomore year. I remembered very little. 14A is not very hard at all if you do the work. On our final, we had three homework problems verbatim and people still complained and called those problems BS. How can a problem be BS if it is straight from the homework? You don't have to go to lecture by the way, just podcast it.

14B: I heard from some of my older friends that this class would be harder and they were definitely right. I did lower than I expected on the first quiz and midterm, but part of that was I was pretty cocky cause I got an A+ in 14A. However, I recovered and realized I had to put in even more effort to do well in this class. I ended up with an A thankfully, but I definitely worked really hard for it. Don't think that 14B will be as easy as 14A.

Dr. Lavelle is very approachable and I think he really cares for his students. He makes all his TAs and UAs do review sessions for the midterm and final. Although I didn't go to any, I think it shows that he really wants you to succeed.

He is a great professor, really teaches the concepts very well. You do have to put in a lot of work outside of the lectures though, which I found out the hard way on the Midterm. Overall, just do all the problems he assigns and work your butt off, can't stress this enough. My final grade was a B+.

chem 14A experience: i went into lavelle's class coming from a very bad high school education. I was used to not studying and getting an amazing grade. Iavelle's class was a struggle since i did not acquire sufficient study skills. I ended up getting a B- in the class and i was torn and very disappointed and thought my premed dreams were over. however i did not give up.

Chem 14B experience: I went into this class with a fired up spirit knowing that i had to work really hard to get a better grade than the previous quarter. I studied REALLY hard for the final and got an ninety percent on it after scoring slightly above average on the midterm. I ended up with a B+ in the class which i am very pleased with.

for all of u premeds I encourage u not to give up! You can do it!

I took Chem 14A with Scerri and 14B with Lavelle. Lavelle is superior to Scerri in almost every regard. He takes more time to thoroughly explaining the material to his students and is open to all questions. This is sharp contrast to Scerri's dismissiveness and refusal to review material. Lavelle requires his TA's to have office hours and review sessions almost every hour Mondays through Fridays. This provides students absolutely every opportunity to get help. He is also fair in the material and deadlines, allowing several days between the last discussion and the quiz/midterm/final. Overall Lavelle's course is more challenging, also more available. Students get what they put in with this professor.

I had 14B and 14A with Lavelle. For someone who came out of high school with a very shitty education (especially in chem), his classes definitely weren't easy but hey, you put in the effort and you probably get what you deserve.

His midterms and final all just involve different ways of manipulating the main concepts you've learned, so just be prepared for that and if you work reasonably hard, you'll be ok. I got Bs for both classes, which I had to accept considering I really didn't know the material inside and out (an A). Nonetheless, happy to leave the classes behind.
