I feel like the amount of work you do in this class isnt really reflective of your grade. The midterm was pretty easy but the final was more tough. What annoys me is that he posts so many homework problems, but some problems on the final were nothing like the many problems he assigned. Its hard to critically think in this class when he does the most simple problems in class and on the hw. It's an okay class. He's also pretty full of himself when he talks about chemistry community, and he forces us to use it by posting questions each week.
I know that currently, his rating on this website is less than 4 stars but DONT TRUST THAT. Dr. Lavelle is a fantastic professor and I'm looking forward to Chem 14B with him. He only requires 7 problems a week for homework and he practically gives you a free 100 points from the homework and online discussions on Chem Community (which is super useful). Lavelle sets up so many review sessions and practically tells you what's going to be covered on the exams. His grading is fair and he has a good staff working with him. Nothing but respect for this man.
He said he wasn't going to put bond lengths on the midterm then he put bond lengths on the midterm. His partial credit sucked and only gave specific points to specific topics. If you don't get an A on every test and midterm you're a failure. HE makes you post on HIS website...but HIS textbooks and so on so to me it seems like he's in this for the money and the glory or whatever. I'm annoyed at this dude- office hours aren't helpful, filled to the brim with pre-meds...His lectures put me to sleep each time. and his audio-visual helping stuff was actually helpful but it stops at quantum stuff which legit gives me so sad because the other stuff only gets harder. He talks so slow too so watching his audio-visual stuff could be done at 2x speed. Personally, I wouldn't take him again.
This man is all cute and funny and stuff in the beginning, but that does not reflect on his final. He gives you 5 quizzes on the material during the quarter which are fairly easy. His midterm is also fairly easy and straightforward too. So you would expect the final to be the same, right?
Absolutely not. He comes down with the hammer of wrath.
Also, another annoying thing he does is he gives you problems that have weird numbers, so it makes you think you are doing the problem wrong. Don't be fooled if your answer looks whack.
Overall though, not too hard of a course and super doable. Make sure to know all the problems he assigns in the textbooks and you'll be gucci. Just don't slack on the final.
I love Laurence Lavelle so much! He is such a sweet old man. I took 14A and 14B with him, and I would take every chemistry class with Lavelle if I could. He is very helpful and I only went to office hours twice but he remembered me. The tests are very fair and expected. Only thing is, you should do the homework because he will put at least one homework problem on the final and it can be tricky sometimes.

Lavelle is one of the sweetest professors I've had at UCLA. I have very little knowledge when it comes to chemistry, and so for those who have taken AP Chemistry or other college level chem, this class won't be too difficult. Some of the concepts he discussed were difficult to understand and so going to office hours or having a good TA will benefit you immensely. The best way to study for this class is to do practice problems -- the homework only requires 7 problems each week, but I STRONGLY encourage you to do as many as possible.
Lavelle provides tons of resources for his students -- dozens of office hours, online modules, study sessions, etc. It's up to you to take advantage of them, and I really wish I had early on in the quarter. The final grades were generously curved at the end, but do not rely on the curve -- do well from the beginning and you will be fine.
