In my opinion, Professor Duquette-Rury is the best professor at UCLA. She teaches an incredibly interesting topic with passion and clarity. Because of her, I have structured my undergraduate studies around migration (and development). While she assigns readings that are more difficult to understand, she takes her time in class to go over the arguments within the research and ensures that each student understands the statistical results. She uses time in class to get every student to participate, while creating a comfortable and encouraging environment that makes participation easy. In hindsight, this class went over topics that were difficult. She challenged normative preconceptions about migration and development. She assigned papers that required extensive research with original arguments. But, she was incredibly thoughtful and helpful along the way. There were readings every week, but they were discussed in class. I cannot stress how much I encourage others to take this class with Professor Duquette-Rury. Students will learn how to write well--she grades toughly on papers to improve students' abilities, and there are multiple papers within the class. Students will understand statistical research in social science. Students will think critically about texts, either challenging or expanding the research. Students will face fears of participation.
She is a pretty hard grader but she is kind, understanding and so open to help out her students in any way! I hate seminars because I hate speaking in front of people and having the pressure of the professor knowing when you fuck up so well since there's like 20 people in the class but she made me feel very comfortable. Definitely one of the best professors I have taken in UCLA.
